Forestry Technician (Trail Crew Member) Intern

Position Title: Forestry Technician (Trail Crew Member) Intern – 520 HR

Position Summary:
The Boise National Forest, Lowman Ranger District is recruiting one 520 Hour Forestry Technician (Trail Crew Member) Intern beginning May 22nd through September 2022. Incumbent will primarily maintain (brushing, logging, and construction trail tread) system trails on the NZ of the Boise NF. This placement will typically work four 10-hour days per week Mondays through Thursday.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Duties will include serving with FS employees maintaining, constructing, and clearing trails (33%), maintaining campgrounds and recreational sites (33%), and cleaning and maintaining tools and equipment (33%). This requires hiking/ working outdoors with a crew of people. Projects will include trail construction, trail maintenance using hand tools, recreation facility improvements, forestry related tasks, constructing bridges and boardwalks, and other carpentry projects.

Required Qualifications:
• Willingness to work as part of a small team
• Good written and verbal communication skills
• A positive attitude
• Current driver’s license
• Ability to lift and carry 50lbs
• Ability and interest to work outdoors in remote settings and inclement weather on uneven ground
• Ability to hike 5-10 miles in a day in rugged country
• Willingness to build and maintain trail
• Willingness to clean campground facilities

Desired Qualifications:
• Attention to detail.
• Physically fit for long days of hard work
• Experience with hand tools and basic carpentry
• Coursework in range management, forestry natural resources or related field
• A strong interest in resource management and working with youth.

Duty/Housing Location:
Duties are performed out of the Lowman Ranger Districts in, Idaho. Lowman is a full-service small towns in western Idaho. Housing is available in a bunkhouse with a common kitchen and shared bedrooms. The candidate may provide their own housing, camp, or use this free forest service housing. Laundry facilities are not available at the bunkhouse, but is within short distance from the housings, as are grocery stores.

Terms of Employment:
One AmeriCorps member will complete a term of service (length dependent on commitment of hours), starting May 22nd through September 2022. The member must complete a minimum of 520 service hours by the end of their term. The member will receive a 30-minute lunch each day and this lunch break does not count towards AmeriCorps member service hours. Training will not exceed 20% of total member service hours.

Program Benefits:
• $8320 living allowance, prorated on a pay period (monthly) basis
• $1678.57 education award upon completion of the 520 hours of service.
The living allowance and education award are taxable. Members are responsible for providing their own food. Service eligibility is contingent upon the results of a criminal background check.
