Biological Technician (Weeds)

Position Title: Biological Technician (Weeds) – 680 HR

Position Summary: T
he Fremont-Winema National Forest is recruiting six 680 Hour Biological Technician (Weeds), beginning June 6 th through September 2022 (680 hour) – four placements will be located in the Silver Lake Ranger District and two placements will be located in the Chiloquin Ranger District. The incumbent will be paired with another intern and coordinate with Botany staff to survey, document, map, and treat noxious weed infestations in areas burned in 2021 fire season. This position will typically work four ten-hour days per week (Monday through Thurs).

Duties and Responsibilities:
The member will map and document any new invasive plant populations located and record the spread of any pre-existing populations. Surveys will also identify any unique vulnerable habitats and assess how plant communities are recovering from disturbance. The member will collect data using tablets, GIS applications and paper survey forms. Treatment will be completed by interns on small to medium populations as time allows. Treatment methods will include both manual removal and application of herbicide (training provided). The member’s time will be spent inventorying, documenting, and mapping noxious weeds (60%) – Treating noxious weeds (30%) –Miscellaneous work (10%).

Required Qualifications:
• Willingness to work as part of a small team and occasionally alone
• Valid state driver’s license.
• Good written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to lift and carry up to 30lbs and to perform manual treatments using hand tools
• Ability to work outdoors in remote settings and inclement weather on uneven ground
• Member will be required to obtain an apprentice or public herbicide applicators license

Desired Qualifications:
• Previous experience using GPS and GIS
• Noxious weed and plant identification
• Strong interest in resource management

Duty Location:
Duties are performed within the Silver Lake, Paisley, Lakeview, Bly, and Chiloquin Ranger Districts. Housing is available in Silver Lake and Chiloquin, either in bunkhouses or shared living within a house depending on the location. Both options would have a common kitchen and shared bedrooms.

Terms of Employment:
Each AmeriCorps member will complete a term of service (length dependent on commitment of hours), starting June 6th 2022 through September 2022. The member must complete a minimum of 680 service hours by the end of their term. The member will receive a 30-minute lunch each day and this lunch break does not count towards AmeriCorps member service hours. Training will not exceed 20% of total member service hours.

Program Benefits:
• 680 Hour -$10,880 living allowance, prorated on a pay period (monthly) basis
• $2,417.14 education award upon completion of the 680 hours of service.
• $1200 Housing and $600 Commuting Total Reimbursement Funding
• The incumbent will receive training in CPR/First Aid & defensive driving.

The living allowance and education award are taxable. Members are responsible for providing their own food. Service eligibility is contingent upon the results of a criminal and driving background check.
