Position Title: Recreation Trail Technician Intern – 680 HR
Position Summary:
The Payette National Forest, McCall & New Meadows Ranger Districts are recruiting two 680 Hour
Recreation Trail Technician Interns beginning June 6 through September 30, 2022. Start/end dates are flexible depending on candidate availability. Incumbent will maintain trails on the Central Zone of the Payette National
Forest. This placement will typically work four ten-hour days per week Monday to Thursday.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Work will entail trail maintenance and construction projects across the Central Zone. Work may entail a significant amount of overnight camping. Ninety percent (90%) of the incumbent’s time will entail working as a crew member on a trail crew that performs light and heavy maintenance on trails, including logout and tread repair. Ten percent (10%) of the incumbent’s time will entail other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications:
  • Previous camping and hiking experience required
  • Ability to perform strenuous physical labor on an everyday basis
  • Ability to work outdoors in remote settings and inclement weather on uneven ground
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs
  • Willingness to learn and work as part of a team in an outdoor setting
  • Strong work ethic and positive attitude
  • Ability to safely use hand and power tools

Desired Qualifications:
  • Outdoor skills preferred.
  • Interest in trail work and natural resources.
  • Excited and committed to mentally and physically challenging days in an outdoor setting with others.

Duty Location:
Duties are performed out of the McCall Ranger District, in McCall, ID. McCall is location 2 hours north of
Boise, ID and 3 hours south Lewiston, ID. Government-provided housing is not available so we are seeking a local candidate or one who can acquire housing in the area.
Terms of Employment:
One AmeriCorps member will complete a term of service (length dependent on commitment of hours), starting
June 6 through September 30, 2022. The member must complete a minimum of 680 service hours by the end of their term. The member will receive a 30-minute lunch each day and this lunch break does not count towards
AmeriCorps member service hours. Training will not exceed 20% of total member service hours.
Program Benefits:
$7,650 living allowance dispersed on a monthly basis and a $2,417.14 education award upon completion of the
680 hours of service. The living allowance and education award are taxable. Members are responsible for providing their own food. Service eligibility is contingent upon the results of a criminal background check.
