Accounting Associate - Remote

Symetra has an exciting opportunity to join our team as an Accounting Associate!

About the role
Are you interested in gaining experience with the accounting cycles and preparing consolidated financial reporting and regulatory filings? Symetra’s Enterprise Reporting department is looking to add a new Accounting Associate to our team. This is a great opportunity for you to learn, grow and gain experience in a variety of closing and reporting activities, including helping to prepare Symetra’s quarterly and annual GAAP financial statements, analyze quarterly results, and assisting with the preparation of other external and management reports. You’ll also support the team in the monthly close process, including the preparation of journal entries, accounting reconciliations, and review of certain schedules.
 
What you will do
     Accounting Close and Reporting Cycle
  • Learning to participate in a variety of reporting activities including
  • Preparing journal entries, financial analytics, general ledger reconciliations, and other management reports
  • Preparing quarterly internal results analysis
  • Preparing the Company's GAAP and Statutory Financial Statements and External Reports 
  • Compile tie-out support gathered from multiple departments
  • Benchmark peers to recommend and apply best practices
  • Developing technical expertise to understand and apply relevant GAAP and Statutory reporting requirements
  • Learning to execute internal controls and maintain related documentation for external reporting
Technical Accounting
  • Learning to prepare accounting memos and policies with guidance from more senior employees
  • Performing technical accounting research related to new transactions or in support of other departments
  • Staying current with developments in the accounting and finance world, sharing knowledge with others
Other Projects
  • Learning to identify areas for improvement and document/update procedures under the direction of others
  • Participating in special projects across finance as needed

Compensation
Hourly Range: $24.32-$40.55 plus eligibility for annual bonus program

Requirements
Your experience and skills
  • 4-year college degree in accounting, finance, or related field preferred. An equivalent combination of experience and education will also be considered
  • Beginning understanding of GAAP accounting principles
  • Strong computer skills with Microsoft Office suite proficiency especially Excel and Word
  • Excellent communication skills written and verbal
  • Approaches projects with curiosity and a desire to learn
  • Effective collaborator with the ability to build relationships across departments
  • Good organization skills with a strong attention to detail
  • Ability to think creatively, effectively problem solve and make decisions
  • Strong time management and multi-tasking skills
  • A positive attitude and sense of humor
