Position Title: Recreation Trail Technician Intern – 680 HR
Position Summary:
The Krassel Ranger District, Payette National Forest, is recruiting for three Recreation Trail Technician Interns beginning May 24 through September 20th. This position will be embedded as a crew member on a Forest
Service Trail and Wilderness Crew in Krassel Ranger District. The District is made up of rugged mountains, densely forested, deep canyons with many wild rivers and high mountain lakes.
Duties and Responsibilities:
This placement is with the Payette National Forest’s Krassel Ranger District. Nintey percent (90%) of the incumbent’s time will entail working as a crew member on a self-contained backpacking crew that performs light and heavy maintenance on the District system trails, including logout and tread repair. Ten percent (10%) of the incumbent’s time will entail other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications:
  • Previous backpacking and camping experience required.
  • Ability to work outdoors in remote settings and inclement weather on uneven ground
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs
  • Ability to hike on steep, rugged terrain both on and off trail
  • Willingness to learn and work as part of a team in an outdoor setting
  • Strong work ethic and positive attitude
  • Ability to safely use hand tools

Desired Qualifications:
  • Outdoor skills preferred.
  • Interest in trail work and natural resources.
  • Excited and committed to mentally and physically challenging days in an outdoor setting with others.

Duty Location:
Duties are performed out of the Krassel Work Center on the South Fork of the Salmon River, Idaho. Housing is provided and the work center is 1 hour drive east of McCall, Idaho.
Terms of Employment:
Each AmeriCorps member will complete a term of service (length dependent on commitment of hours), starting
May 24 through Sept 20th. The member must complete a minimum of 680 service hours by the end of their term. The member will receive a 30-minute lunch each day and this lunch break does not count towards
AmeriCorps member service hours. Training will not exceed 20% of total member service hours.
Program Benefits:
$7,650 living allowance dispersed on a monthly basis and a $2,417.14 education award upon completion of the
680 hours of service. The living allowance and education award are taxable. Members are responsible for providing their own food. Service eligibility is contingent upon the results of a criminal background check.
