English Language Learner Internship (VESL)

BACKGROUND: The International Rescue Committee responds to the world’s worst humanitarian crises and helps people whose lives and livelihoods are shattered by conflict and disaster to survive, recover and gain control of their future. In more than 40 countries and 26 U.S. cities, our dedicated teams provide clean water, shelter, health care, education and empowerment support to refugees and displaced people. 

SCOPE OF VOLUNTEER WORK: The IRC provides Vocational ESL, Job Readiness Training, and Employment Services courses to help students build their English language capabilities, work readiness skills, and search for employment. Interns will work with their supervisor to choose tasks that fit their skills and desires to learn. Some of those tasks including the following: 
 
RESPONSIBILITIES:  
  • Assist clients with their job search  
  • Work directly with clients on job search skills and tactics 
  • Teach clients about the interview process while assisting with interviewing techniques 
  • Support clients by bringing them to their interviews 
  • Complete research on job training opportunities for clients 
  • Support in the filing of documents as needed  
  • Other duties as requested by the ELL Instructor or Employment Services staff  
 
REQUIREMENTS:  
  • Positive Attitude, Energetic 
  • Motivated and enthusiastic about job skills training 
  • Flexibility to work with a variety of clients needs  
  • Experience working with multi-cultural environment  
 
IMPORTANT INFORMATION:
  • This is an unpaid internship requiring a minimum of 240 hours to be completed over the course of 2-4 months (6/01/21 - 8/31/22) working at least 15-20 hours per week during business hours 9a-5p, M-F. Start date is flexible and can begin in May if preferred.
  • The IRC in Sacramento is currently operating under a hybrid work model. In certain cases, we will try to accommodate preferences for remote-only internships provided all duties can be accomplished online.
  • Work-related driving is eligible for reimbursement at the charitable rate.
  • A contribution of $40 for the background check is required upon accepting initial internship offer. 
  • Internships are available for current college students starting in their second year, graduate students, and graduates less than 2 years post-graduation (with some exceptions). Course credit is available if the student coordinates with their university and confirms the appropriate paperwork with the Volunteer Coordinator.
