PhD Medical Research Intern

 LOCATION: New York, NY in-office


The medical research team at COTA Healthcare features a summer internship program that provides opportunities for statistics and programming interns, who are full-time students currently pursuing their degree in statistics, biostatistics or a related field (applied mathematics, epidemiology, data science, etc.) . The internship program, lasting 6-8 weeks, will focus on understanding real world data (RWD) in the drug development process, learning about statistical applications, and exploring trends in clinical research for furthering drug development in oncology. The intern will work closely with experienced biostatisticians to perform statistical analysis and/or conduct statistical research related to RWD, observational studies, pharmacoeconomic analyses, and other relevant study types. The internship program fosters growth and development of its participants by providing networking opportunities, career development, and involvement in projects that make a significant contribution to the medical research team. COTA is a startup environment and the intern can expect to have cross-functional interactions with data scientists, engineers, medical professionals, and business professionals. 

This is an in-person internship based in NYC with no remote option.


The intern will be provided a topic that is related to a specific RWD statistical research question and will contribute to statistical methodology development and/or problem solving. 
  • Contribute statistical deliverables to a specific project. Deliverables include statistical/mathematical methodology reports, validated programming code, and other appropriate reports and presentations.
  • Participate in assigned department activities and initiatives related to the assigned project (i.e., attend and participate in cross functional meetings, presentations, trainings)
  • Work collaboratively as necessary with members of study teams to meet assigned goals


  • Currently enrolled as a student at an accredited college/university pursuing a PhD degree in statistics or biostatistics or related field (applied mathematics, epidemiology, data science, etc.) in the U.S and will return back to the university after the internship.
  • Have completed at least two full years of graduate study prior to the start of the internship
  • Have an accumulated GPA of ≥ 3.0
  • Be in good academic standing within your graduate program and overall at your university
  • Have a track record of accomplishment
  • Be authorized to work in the US
  • Must be curious, intellectually humble and collaborative
  • Statistical programming skills in R
  • Excellent writing, communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Foundational knowledge of descriptive and predictive statistics.
  • Passionate about data analysis
  • Bonus points for background in causal inference, survival analysis, observational data
  • Understanding of real-world data sourced from EHR
  • Research experience in oncology, genomics or bioinformatics is a plus.

Final Presentation:

Each Intern is expected to prepare a short presentation to their team to share what they have learned through their internship and how they hope their new knowledge will help them secure their future career

Bonus Points: 

  • Background in biology, oncology, or public health
  • Understanding of real-world data sourced from EHR
  • Research experience in oncology, genomics or bioinformatics
