General Purpose
IU School of Medicine Department of Emergency Medicine (IUSM EM) is looking for a Communications Assistant to help us execute social media campaigns, support internal communication needs and coordinate special projects for a department that spans both the clinical and education sectors. This part-time (15-20 hours a week) student position will provide you with hands-on experience in the field of internal communications.  
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:  
IUSM EM programs & services need to be thoughtfully communicated to providers, staff, and prospective team members across multiple platforms and locations. The communications assistant will support these efforts by fulfilling the following duties: 
  • 30% creating and scheduling emails in Salesforce Marketing Cloud (single-topic & newsletters)  
  • 10% management of shared communications inbox  
  • 40% planning, organizing & gathering content for social media content 
  • 20% special projects as they arise 
Examples of projects could be:  
  • Drafting advertising content for the EM Clerkship URiM scholarship  
  • Attending EM events to capture images for social media purposes  
  • Assembling the content and scheduling the delivery for the next LeadER blog.  
Qualifications:  
Required qualifications include:  
  • Possess at least a sophomore status at a university 
  • Have and maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.5 of greater 
  • Must be reliable and able to manage time to work on multiple projects 
  • Must be able to work independently/autonomously as well be a collaborative team member 
  • Demonstrates creativity  
  • Strong writing skills  
  • Strong social media skills  
Nice to have:  
  • Working knowledge of Adobe Photoshop  
  • Familiar with Salesforce Marketing Cloud or other email marketing platforms 
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office programs  
Working with IUSM EM  
IUSM EM aims to support a sustainable, healthy relationship with your work. As a student, that means you will be working no more than 15 – 20 hours a week. The IUSM EM team currently works on a hybrid schedule, which will include this position, meaning that you will only need to spend 4-8 hours in the office per week.  
What You Will Learn 
Critical and Creative Thinking – Students will learn how to apply their critical and creating thinking skills to develop marketing and communication assets that achieve specific goals (such as reaching a certain population via social media, achieving a certain open rate in our newsletter and more). Students will learn how to use the power of storytelling to write engaging news stories, social media posts, and learn from professional communicators and editors on effective healthcare communication.   
Teamwork and Problem Solving – Students will learn to collaborate effectively with others by participating in team projects. They will learn how to stay organized and manage their time effectively by balancing multiple marketing and communication projects simultaneously.
