Keeping Washington Clean and Evergreen

The Water Quality Program within the Department of Ecology has an opportunity for a Water Quality Intern. 

This internship is located in our Southwest Regional Office in Lacey, WA.

During Healthy Washington Roadmap to Recovery, employees are working a combination of in-office and/or telework based on position and business need. This position is not currently required to work in the office on a regular basis. Ecology is following current state guidance regarding mask requirements, health screening questions before entry, and social distancing. Looking ahead, Ecology has recently updated the agency policies on telework and flexible and compressed work schedules. Are you interested in being part of a team that strives to protect water quality for human health and the environment? This position helps to support the efforts of specialists and inspectors in watersheds that flow to the Columbia River, Pacific Ocean, Puget Sound, and the Strait of Juan de Fuca. These areas are homes a variety of aquatic life, including the Southern Resident Orca, shellfish, and endangered salmonoids.

The mission of the Water Quality Program is to protect and restore Washington's waters to support healthy watersheds and communities. Our work ensures state waters can support beneficial uses including recreational and business activities, supplies for clean drinking water, and the protection of fish, shellfish, wildlife, and public health.  

NOTE: This internship is a non-permanent position, expected to last up to 12 months.

What makes this role unique?
The Watershed Resources Unit is a diverse group of Construction and Municipal Stormwater programs, Hydro-electric dam projects, and Nonpoint Source Pollution Control efforts. We work to ensure water quality is protected from these various activities. In this position, you will assist in supporting the team’s efforts by providing tools necessary for success.

What you will do: 

Project file organization and maintenance
  • Learn and implement SharePoint and electronic file management to assist the unit with project documentation.
  • Utilize the Southwest Regional Office's database to maintain and update files for FERC (Federal Energy Regulatory Commission) and Contaminated Construction Projects. This may also include traditional paper filing systems.
  • Manage FERC related project paperwork to include records, state approvals, and workgroup meeting deliverables in order to track current activities. 
  • Organize the unit's SharePoint database for Construction and Municipal Stormwater programs. 
  • Update the PARIS (Permit and Administration Reporting Information System) database to include inspections, discharge monitoring reports, signature authorizations, and identification numbers for permits/permittees.
Create Education and Outreach strategy for Nonpoint Source Pollution Control
  • Utilize Community-Based Social Marketing tools to help the Nonpoint Source Pollution team create and implement a region-wide Education and Outreach (E&O) strategy.
  • Ensure all E&O documents fulfill agency accessibility guidelines and requirements. Update current documents as needed. 
Project mapping 
  • Develop maps of hydroelectric dam locations and associated habitat activities, using GPS (Global Positioning Systems) and GIS (Geographic Information Systems), to document on-going projects.

Required Qualifications:
Experience for both required and desired qualifications can be gained through various combinations of formal professional employment, educational and volunteer experience. See below for how you may qualify.

  • Four (4) years of education and/or experience in environmental, physical, or a natural science, public administration, or communication; and
  • Six (6) months of education and/or experience using databases to enter and find information, creating maps using GIS, or developing education and outreach materials.
Option 2:
  • A Bachelor's degree in environmental, physical, or a natural science, public administration, or communication; and
  • Six (6) months of education and/or experience using databases to enter and find information, creating maps using GIS, or developing education and outreach materials.
