This is a professional architectural historian/historian position responsible for administering the Missouri State Certified Local Government (CLG) program and coordinating outreach services for the State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO). As a SHPO team member, you will provide technical assistance and professional expertise to communities, individuals, and organizations across the state. What you’ll do:
- Support the work of CLGs through training, individual requests for assistance, and periodic program evaluations. Receive, review, and make recommendations on requests from local governments for CLG status.
- Ensure the state CLG program meets all mandated National Park Service (NPS) and state requirements.
- Identify CLG training needs and plan, organize, and promote training for CLGs, including the annual Certified Local Government Forum. Contribute to the development of the statewide preservation plan, curriculum, public programs, and exhibits to teach preservation at all levels, including developing outreach plans for Preservation Month and the Missouri State Fair.
- Assist the SHPO Preservation Planner/Grant Manager with HPF subgrant projects by providing subject matter experience, advising CLGs and other applicants concerning grant proposals, scoring applications, and inspecting grant funded activities to ensure consistency with the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for Rehabilitation.
- Assist with administrative management of properties with preservation easements and covenants.
- Assist as needed with review and consultation on projects undergoing Section 106 review, Historic Tax Credit applications, and National Register eligibility assessments and nominations.
All you need for success:
Minimum Qualifications
- Master’s degree in history, architectural history, historic preservation, or closely related field and 1 year of relevant experience. (Other approved education or experience may be considered as a substitute for the required education or experience.)
Preferred Qualifications
- Knowledge of federal and Missouri state legislation, regulations, and requirements pertaining to historic preservation.
- Knowledge of Missouri’s history and architecture and the principles of planning and zoning, community development, and real estate related to historic properties.
- Skill in identifying relevant historical and current data that substantiates a grant request.
- Knowledge of database systems and their design.
- Ability to manage multiple independent and collaborative projects concurrently.
- Ability to operate a motor vehicle, travel, and maintain a valid vehicle operator’s license.
