Science Policy Intern
Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) is looking for a Science Policy Intern to join the Ocean Twilight Zone (OTZ) project. This is a temporary, casual (8-10 hours a week), non-exempt position, and is eligible for casual benefits.
OTZ offers an opportunity to gain exposure and experience in the critical juncture between leading scientific research and actionable policy. You will learn how to conduct basic policy research and analysis and to present your results in a clear, organized fashion. Topics to address include, but are not limited to, fisheries biology and management, the economic and ecosystem value of the marine resources, human impacts on the high seas, and the range of existing and planned policy initiatives that stand to regulate activities affecting the mesopelagic.
The project office is located at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) in Woods Hole, MA and staffed by WHOI employees.
The internal working title for this position could be either Administrative Assistant I or Administrative Assistant II. The level of the position will be determined and commensurate with the selected candidate's level of education & experience.
Essential Functions
Both levels:
- Researching relevant policy initiatives, as directed
- Producing written reports detailing findings and analyzing results
- Producing public-friendly social media and other content related to high-level findings
- Other administrative duties as needed
Education & Experience
Administrative Assistant I:
- Performs other duties deemed necessary with supervision.
- High school diploma is required.
- Working toward a bachelor's degree preferred in relevant course of study.
Administrative Assistant II:
- Performs all the functions listed above with additional level of independence.
- Ability to identify and resolve both immediate and long-term problems with slightly less supervision.
- Performs duties with guidance from the supervisor.
- High school diploma is required.
- Working toward a bachelor's or master's degree in relevant course of study.
- At least two years of relevant work experience.

Physical Requirements
This position is mostly sedentary in nature and involves some repetitive motion such as with data entry. There is also the occasional need for retrieving and replacing files that requires some bending, stooping, pushing and pulling. This position will work alone as well as around and with others.
