We advocate for people everywhere to gain access to effective, affordable modern contraception and reproductive health care. Our nationwide Population Education program trains more than 12,000 teachers and reaches three million K-12 students annually, raising awareness about the impacts of global population growth on our environment and human well-being.

Population Connection represents its 40,000 donors along with hundreds of thousands of other interested Americans, including activists and volunteers, who believe that voluntary population stabilization is critical to solving our most serious global crises, from climate change to poverty to armed conflict. We are looking for a dedicated writer to make that case in earned media pieces (op-eds, LTEs, guest columns), blog articles, and social media posts.
 
About the role
The Communications Manager will be responsible for monitoring current events related to population issues (environment, sustainable development, reproductive health and rights) and responding to them in a timely manner with the goal of getting pieces published by well-regarded news outlets around the country on a regular basis. The Communications Manager will also be expected to write blog posts on topics that interest our supporters and to consider SEO in the writing of and sharing of those posts on social media. Additionally, the Communications Manager will maintain the social media accounts (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter) for Population Connection, sharing media hits, blog posts, organization events, quarterly magazine content, etc.

This position is ideal for someone experienced in journalism, who can research and pitch their own stories and write on tight deadlines. The Communications Manager will report to the Vice President for Communications and may work with other members of the Communications team and with the President of the organization.

Desired qualifications
·        Superior writing skills, with the ability to accurately convey data and statistics
·        Experience working in journalism or in writing pieces for earned media on behalf of an organization or other entity
·        Knowledge of or willingness to learn how to work in WordPress
·        Familiarity with social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter)
·        Progressive values rooted in human rights; must be pro-choice
·        Independent, curious self-starter who requires minimal day-to-day oversight
·        Detail-oriented, organized, efficient, and flexible
 
Location:
This position can be remote or can be based in our DC office, as the candidate prefers
 
Salary:
$80k (Salary may be higher as appropriate for the selected candidate, with internal equity considerations taken into account.)
