TRIO SSS Peer Tutor
Department: Division of Undergraduate Education, TRIO Student Support Services, Taylor Hall 3130
Status: Part-Time (up to 20 hours per week, all Peer Tutors are guaranteed at least five hours per week)
Subjects: Biology, Chemistry, Math & General Study Skills
General Purpose: The primary purpose of the IUPUI TRIO Student Support Services is to foster a supportive undergraduate experience that will increase the retention and graduation rates of first-generation and federal income eligible student participants through the provision of intensive services.
Through intensive training for our peer tutors, we strive to help the students in TRIO Student Support Services overcome academic challenges, develop essential academic skills, and take an active role in their learning throughout their undergraduate careers. SSS Peer Tutors are essential to our program. They help students understand difficult course content, prepare for exams, and they help students to develop study skills and techniques. Peer Tutors are expected to demonstrate respect to all individuals who utilize our tutoring services and to work diligently in helping students to accomplish their academic goals.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
- Determine each students’ level of understanding, strengths and areas of difficulty, and needs by asking probing questions
- Review and explain concepts by using multiple approaches
- Help students to understand homework
- Teach study skills and techniques
- Help students prepare for tests and exams
- Work with students to develop a detailed plan of action
- Refer students to appropriate resources when needed outside of tutoring
Qualifications:
Required Qualifications
- Cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher
- Must have earned B+ or higher in courses that you will tutor (does not apply to General Study Skills Peer Tutors)
- Must have at least 30 credits earned at IUPUI
- Must be in good academic standing
- Must be able to work one on one with peers and in small groups
- Two Faculty Recommendations

- Strong written and oral communication skills
- Ability to problem solve
- Organizational skills
- Maintain professional demeanor between peers and university faculty and staff
- An understanding and enthusiasm for the course/skills that you will tutor
- An understanding of students with different needs, interests, and abilities
*Students who do not meet the academic qualifications may be considered if they can prove tremendous academic growth and ways they have overcome.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Gained in this Role:
Communication- This position will teach students how to effectively convey ideas through oral, written, and visual communication. Students will evaluate information and listen actively while tutoring their peers.
Problem Solving- This position will teach students how to collect information from their peers by asking investigative questions. Students will think critically with the information they have collected and analyze each situation to determine what strategies to recommend during tutoring sessions.
