Urban Advantage Middle School Program Manager

The American Museum of Natural History is one of the world's preeminent scientific and cultural institutions, and has as its mission to discover, interpret, and disseminate information about human cultures, the natural world, and the universe through a wide-ranging program of scientific research, education, and exhibition. The Gottesman Center for Science Teaching and Learning brings together in one organizational structure all the Museum's activities directed towards K-12 schools and teacher education. Urban Advantage is a partnership program in science education that involves eight New York City science-rich cultural institutions and currently serves over 300 middle schools and over 1000 science teachers.

This position will work collaboratively with the Urban Advantage (UA) Managers, Directors, and a team of professionals from several of the UA partner institutions across New York City to provide comprehensive science educational supports to participating schools, including designing and facilitating innovative professional learning (PL) programs for administrators, parent coordinators, and teachers who teach science to grades 6-8. This position will focus on implementing PL goals across the program related to aligning UA with new science standards, supporting a teaching framework that aligns with the new standards, helping build PL communities, and engaging in reflective practice work.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
● Designing and facilitating UA PL individually, and in collaboration with other internal and external partners, to support UA teachers in enacting high-leverage, three-dimensional, and equitable teaching practices with learners.
● Supporting the implementation of coherent family engagement programs in UA schools by co-designing thoughtful Parent Coordinator workshops and promoting goal-oriented school community field trips in collaboration with the Family Outreach Manager, and attending school-based science events.
● Providing support to UA administrators through co-design and co-facilitation of administrator PL and helping them to develop program implementation plans.
● Strategically collaborating with other UA managers and partners, to support the expansion of teacher leadership in Urban Advantage through:
- Co-managing the UA Lead Teacher critical friends' group/professional learning community.
- Maintaining and expanding the UA Fellows Program under the guidance of the Associate Director.
- Integrating reflective practice work throughout UA programming to support program goals.
● Collaborating with other UA Managers and Directors, and external providers, on the identification and facilitation of relevant staff PL and retreat topics.
● Leading or co-leading work with UA partners both in monthly meetings and in smaller working groups to help facilitate key initiatives.
● Collaborating with other UA Managers and Directors and partners to facilitate the vision and goals for Middle School PL.
● Supporting evaluation efforts of the Middle School Program with the Research and Evaluation team, Directors, and outside providers as needed.
● Maintaining communication with the NYC DOE to identify areas of support and relevant connections to PL.
● Participating in, and occasionally helping to facilitate UA Executive Partner meetings.
● Providing feedback to the UA Directors on the Middle School Program budget.
● Collaborating with other UA and Gottesman Center staff to design and implement innovative PL programs that are responsive to evolving teacher needs.
● Completing other duties as assigned by the Senior Director of the Gottesman Center and the Urban Advantage program leadership.
● Schedule includes some weekends, evenings, and online work.

Required Qualifications:

● Bachelor’s degree in science or science education.● Five years of professional experience teaching science, and/or developing and implementing teacher professional learning programs or teaching adults.● Exceptional organizational, time-management skills, problem solving and communication skills.● Ability to work independently and in a proactive manner.● Proficiency with Microsoft Office programs and Google Suite.● The ability to work with confidential data and demonstrate discretion.

Preferred Qualifications:

● Master’s degree in science or science education.● Knowledge of NYC middle schools, particularly around science teacher PL and classroom science instruction.● Knowledge of culturally responsive teaching.● Familiarity with science learning in informal science institutions.● Familiarity with Moodle or similar online learning platforms and online teaching tools such as Nearpod, Canvas, Kahoot! Etc.
