MURI Program: Artistic Nano-Pottery: Integration of Advanced Nano Ceramics into Creative Smart Sculptures

DUE is home to IEL and the CRL which is administering the Multidisciplinary Undergraduate Research Institute (MURI) both in the academic year and the summer, which creates and supports multidisciplinary research teams consisting of undergraduate and graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, senior staff and faculty. The primary purpose of these teams is to provide undergraduates a unique opportunity to gain research skills by working with mentors on real world problems.

Overview of department:

The School of Engineering and Technology offers programs in both the engineering and technology and has partnered with Machyne Makerspace at 16Tech. Machyne is a new community-based makerspace.

Project summary:

This project will provide research, development, presentation, and publication opportunities for each student on the team as they look to build a new AR platform to help people learn machinery at a makerspace. The team will be comprised of two primary positions: Hardware Developer This position will focus on hardware development in augmented reality as students work toward designing a customized headset in AR. This could be a student who has an interest or background in mechanical, electrical or computer engineering. Software Development This position will focus on software development with Augmented Reality. This could be a student who has an interest or background in computer science, computer information technology, computer graphics technology or media arts.

Specific tasks that the MURI student will complete: 

Each student will do the following tasks:
  1. Students will learn about Machyne and the 16 Tech innovation district north of IUPUI.
  2. Review the current literature on augmented reality as well as the current software and hardware that has been developed
  3. Identify next steps for research and development of the platform being developed
  4. Develop fully-functional AR headset for use with mobile application
  5. Further develop the software that can be used with more than one machine.
  6. Write a research report appropriate for publication (building on previous drafts)
  7. Prepare a research poster and give a final poster presentation
  8. Students will present their work through a poster and final report

Specific qualifications (knowledge, skills, class standing, etc) we desire the MURI candidate to have:

  1. Students should have a background of understanding within the fields of mechanical, electrical or computer engineering.
  2. Students should have a background of understanding within the fields of computer science, computer information technology, computer graphics technology or media arts.

By the end of this position assignment, the student will meet the following learning objectives

  1. Communicator: Students will learn the process of working on a team with various disciplines represented including the development of team contracts and project planning
  2. Problem Solver and Communicator: Students will learn how to synthesize current project information and literature to then build on it for a future team.
