Communications Specialist

Communications Specialist

We are seeking a Communications Specialist who will support the development of a wide variety of internal and external communications within the Department of International Health. A priority will be to assess and improve internal communications structures to facilitate collaboration among faculty, staff, and students. Another top priority is to promote the department's publications, initiatives, and new projects across communication platforms. The Communications Specialist will report to the Department's Communications and Marketing Manager.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

• Assist in redesigning and maintaining the Department's internal facing website.
• Coordinate the internal and external promotion of events, working with administrative and communications staff across the Department and School.
• Maintain and create content for the IH public facing website.
• Assist in redesigning and improving the IH handbook along with other onboarding materials.
• Develop and manage social media posts.
• Write and coordinate the production of communication vehicles.
• Coordinate with other JHU communications teams to amplify messaging.
• Maintain and develop Department listservs.
• Assist in coordinating media engagement.
• Work with the Bloomberg School's web team to develop new features to help showcase the IH portfolio.
• Perform miscellaneous related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):

• Bachelor's Degree in related field such as Communications, Journalism, or Creative Writing.
• 2 years related experience.
• Master's Degree in a related field may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.*

* JHU Equivalency Formula: 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience.

** Applicants who do not meet the posted requirements but are completing their final academic semester/quarter will be considered eligible for employment and may be asked to provide additional information confirming their academic completion date.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience with web content management.
• Experience with social media and communications platforms.

Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

• Ability to translate complex concepts into engaging messaging for key audiences.
• Demonstrated ability to write engaging content clearly and concisely.
• Well-developed interpersonal and supervisory skills, strong organizational ability, self-motivation, and excellent communication skills.
• Knowledge of Adobe software applications and Microsoft Office software.
• Proficiency with Excel and Powerpoint.
• Experience with Adobe Photoshop and InDesign preferred.
• Highly organized and detail-oriented.
• Excellent communication and coordination skills and comfortable working in a team environment.
• Ability to manage multiple projects successfully.
• Sound judgment on prioritizing competing projects.

Physical Requirements:

• Able to sit for extended periods, stand, reach, and bend as well pull, push, and/or lift to ten pounds without difficulty.

Starting Salary Range: $43,970 - $60,390 annually (commensurate with experience)

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
