R&D Engineering Internship

Blue Robotics is a rapidly growing company that designs and manufactures marine robotics components and vehicles to enable the future of ocean exploration.

You will work on a team with our R&D engineers to solve big problems and your ideas will help drive the direction and growth of the company. Every day will bring new challenges and you will have exposure to many different products, designs, technologies, and processes.

We’re looking for people who are driven, organized, and can handle independence in this role. You’ll be guided by our team of engineers, but given responsibility and projects of your own. Your work will have a tangible and direct impact every day on the future of understanding our oceans. 

Internship Dates:
For many applicants, this will be a Summer 2022 internship. However, we are flexible and can start an intern on a part-time basis as early as April. The right fit for this opportunity will have at least three months of full-time (or nearly full-time) availability.

Essential Functions:
  • Iterative development of new products, including:
  • Concept generation and problem solving
  • Creating new parts, assemblies, and drawings
  • Rapid prototyping and testing
  • Collecting data and generating test reports
  • Working with new and existing suppliers on new products
  • Writing requirements, specifications and other engineering documentation
  • Building and maintaining field test vehicles
  • Designing, assembling, and maintaining lab testing equipment
  • Assisting in lab testing including assembly of test articles and application of test factors
  • Developing engineering change orders (ECOs). This includes:
  • Revising the designs of existing products
  • Creating and revising drawings
  • Communicating with suppliers to implement part changes
  • Testing and validating new changes
  • Generating engineering change documentation
  • Working with other departments to coordinate ECO implementation
  • Participating in team meetings and communicating within and outside the R&D department

Essential Qualifications/Skills:
  • In-progress Bachelor’s degree in any Engineering discipline
  • Demonstrated experience with SolidWorks or other CAD
  • Soldering, machining, fabrication, or 3D printing experience
  • Experience with Arduino and/or Raspberry Pi or other microcontrollers
  • Strong problem-solving skills
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Capable of being self-managed and committed to working in a fast-paced environment

Preferred Qualifications/Skills:
  • Experience performing any of the “Essential Functions” above
  • Work experience in an engineering or manufacturing environment
  • Demonstrated experience in taking ownership of engineering projects and pushing them through to completion. This includes project management experience.
  • Any robotics experience, including RC vehicles
  • PCB design or other electrical experience
  • Proficient in SolidWorks
