Intern, Political and Security Affairs
The National Bureau of Asian Research (NBR) is looking for a team player seeking to develop their research, writing, and administrative skills and to gain professional experience in a nonprofit, policy-oriented setting. The Political and Security Affairs (PSA) Intern will be exposed to various NBR projects, such as Into Africa: China's Emerging Strategy, China's Military Modernization: Implications for Regional Security, the People's Liberation Army (PLA) Executive Education Course and annual conference, and projects related to specific countries or subregions such as Taiwan and the Korean Peninsula.
This is a paid, full-time (40 hours per week), temporary (6-month) internship located in NBR's Washington, D.C. office. The ideal candidate will be available to start in March 2022 and work through September 2022. The Intern will be supervised by the Project Manager for Political and Security Affairs. This internship position would be ideal for a candidate seeking to apply and expand his/her skills and build a portfolio in project management, research, writing, and editing in order to advance career opportunities.
Responsibilities
- Project Activities: drafting and proof-reading project descriptions, concept papers, and other documents; maintaining project documentation, web-pages, and filing systems
- Research Support and Writing: providing substantive research assistance for project teams and scholars, undertaking literature reviews, and performing other research and writing assignments
- Publications Support: reviewing, fact-checking, proof-reading, and formatting publications; assisting with publications distribution (including mailings), etc.
- Grant Development: tracking development and grant opportunities; assisting with drafting and scoping project proposal narratives
- Database Administration: compiling grant and contact information and conducting research for institutional and project databases
- Event Planning: providing administrative support to conferences, workshops, presentations, and briefings (drafting agendas; assisting with travel, accommodation, and venue arrangements; note-taking, etc.)
- Phone and General Office Support: answering incoming calls to the organization and provide general office support as needed
- Participating in and supporting other NBR activities as needed
Qualifications
- Strong interest in political and security-related developments in East Asia
- Degree holder preferably in Asia Studies, International Relations, Political Science, Security Studies, or a related field, preferably a current M.A. candidate or recent M.A. or B.A. graduate
- Some professional experience with research, writing, editing, event planning, or other responsibilities listed above preferred
- Demonstrated proficiency in a relevant geographical or topical area of Asia studies and/or U.S.-Asia policy, particularly Chinese foreign policy, the PLA, Taiwan, maritime security issues, and/or nuclear issues
- Reading and research proficiency in an Asian language, Chinese and/or Korean preferred
