NBC News Group Internships – Summer 2022, Washington D.C.

While we continuously monitor COVID-19 and its impact, our plan is to host summer internships in both a virtual and in-person format. Opportunities listed will either be in-person (requiring an intern to work from an NBCU office location 3-5 days per week) based on the location mentioned or virtual, depending on business needs.

In addition to all of our internships being paid, we will also offer the following for our Summer 2022 interns:

• Paid company holidays for full-time interns.
• Robust networking, learning and development opportunities for all interns, whether in-person or virtual.
• Financial assistance to offset expenses for transportation and housing may be available on a needs-based basis for eligible in-person interns. More details about eligibility for this assistance will be provided at the time of offer.

Responsibilities :

Opportunities may include (but are not limited to:

Technical Production: 
  • Observing and understanding the different technical operations on a network level
  • Screening and logging video for various sources, including transcribing interviews
  • Assisting technical crew with daily assignments
  • Learning different areas such as audio, video, mobile studio truck, satellite truck, studio crew, engineering services, editors, archivists, etc.
  • Assisting the engineering department with daily tasks 

Andrea Mitchell Reports: 
  • Researching stories and leads, primarily via telephone and internet
  • Preparing research materials for Andrea Mitchell and producers from various sources, including editorial notes
  • Assisting with TODAY and Nightly News packages
  • Finding and contacting interview subjects; setting up interviews
  • Greeting and escorting on-air show guests and panelists
  • Running research and scripts to the studio while on-air
  • Screening and logging video from various sources, transcribing interviews

Meet the Press: 
  • Observe and participate in planning, research and taping involved in the production of a national network news program
  • Assist in maintaining extensive political research files as well as in compiling research for the show and other projects, including The Chuck Toddcast and “MTP Daily” on MSNBC
  • Assist producers with production preparation, digital initiatives and an assortment of other show related tasks
  • Take initiative to suggest new digital trends, potential guests, and topics for the show and associated channels

Political Unit: 
  • Collaborate directly with reporters and editors to generate story ideas for the “Meet the Press Blog,” including use of in-house coverage and live events to help form pitches
  • Finding, contacting and interviewing subjects for stories, primarily via telephone and internet
  • Writing stories for publication on the “Meet the Press Blog” 
  • Contributing daily research to “Meet the Press: First Read” and additional long-term reporting projects 
  • Assisting in daily calls with the political unit, including discussing ideas to inform coverage on Meet the Press 
  • Fact-checking reporting by the political unit in its coverage of national stories

White House Unit:
  • Assisting White House Producers with screening and logging of Presidential events and Senior Administration Official remarks and briefings 
  • Transcribing interviews and sound bites of the President and other members of the Cabinet and Administration 
  • Researching stories via internet and telephone as well as NBC archives 
  • Preparing information for White House Correspondents on specific topic matters from various sources, including editorial notes and news articles 
  • Finding and contacting interview subjects 

Capitol Hill Unit 
  • Logging and transcribing press conferences, hearings and interviews 
  • Researching stories about politics and policy for Hill correspondents and producers 
  • Assisting producers with logistics and editorial planning 
  • Attending stakeouts on Capitol Hill as needed 
  • Producing liveshots for correspondents as needed 

CNBC Production/Reporting:
  • Working directly with CNBC reporters, anchors, producers, editors and photographers
  • Assisting producers at live locations across Washington, DC including Capitol Hill and the White House
  • Pitching and reporting your own stories for CNBC.com
  • Collaborating on podcast production
  • Contributing to social media efforts across all platforms
  • Monitoring and transcribing live events

Qualifications/Requirements :

• In pursuit of an Associate, Bachelor or Graduate degree at an Accredited Institution and be able to provide documentation to confirm your degree progress.

• Current class standing of sophomore or above (30 credits).

• Must be authorized to work in the United States without visa sponsorship by NBCUniversal.

Additional Job Requirements

• If selected for an in-person internship, must be willing to work in Washington, DC.

• Must submit an attestation disclosing your COVID-19 vaccination status and, if partially or fully vaccinated, submitting your vaccination record no later than 7 days following commencement of employment.

• Must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 at the commencement of employment or must undergo regular COVID-19 testing if Company determines your job position requires accessing an NBCUniversal worksite.

• Must be willing to adhere to all Company COVID-19 workplace safety policies and protocols.

Desired Characteristics :

• Students with class standing of junior or above preferred

• Cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above

• Strong interest in the media industry

• Commitment to building an inclusive work environment

• Ability to multitask and highly organized

• Excellent verbal and written communication

• Previous internship experience and on-campus involvement

• Strong interest in and demonstrated knowledge of current affairs

Desired majors: Journalism or Broadcast Journalism, Digital/New Media Studies, Communications, Political Science, Production, Technical Operations
