Sustainability Coordinator at Star Island

The Sustainability Coordinator works to implement Star Island’s sustainability initiative. This is accomplished primarily through daily management of food and biosolids composting systems, grounds and garden oversight, and engagement with staff and guests about environmental issues in order to increase awareness, inspire behavior change, and foster a sense of environmental responsibility.

· Daily maintenance of island’s composting facilities in accordance with New Hampshire solid waste regulations and sludge management requirements. Hands-on work includes emptying food waste totes, batch set-up, daily temperature readings, management of finishing and curing piles, sifting, testing as required, and distribution. Equipment (small backhoe or skidsteer; tote tipper; automated sifter) is used for most of these processes.

· Maintain schedules and records, particularly compost, food waste, and island produce.  

· Oversee garden maintenance and landscape care: planning, preparation, seasonal care, watering, harvesting, and tool/equipment maintenance and repair.

· Recruit, coordinate, and manage volunteers for specific garden/landscape projects, work days, or routine tasks.

· Organize and implement sustainability projects.

· Raise awareness of island-wide sustainability through social media, displays, workshops, and projects.

· Participate in regular environmental services team meetings, tasks (compost!), outreach, and projects.

This is a residential position on Star Island. Star Island is part of the Isles of Shoals, a small group of islands just off the coast of Maine and New Hampshire. The island is home to a seasonal conference center serving nearly 300 guests a week and operated by just over 100 staff members. Star Island is a great place to be a part of a dynamic community, experience island living, and enjoy a unique natural environment.
