Wildlife Health Coordinator

The purpose of this position is to coordinate the implementation of the Fish and Wildlife Health Program goals in conjunction with the Wildlife Veterinarian. 
Based on direction provided in species management plans, wildlife disease management plans, and other agency initiatives, this position will assist with the investigation, monitoring, researching, and management of diseases, most notably chronic wasting disease, and other factors affecting the health and survival of Virginia wildlife. 
This position will serve as an expert that helps plan, oversee and implement applicable projects and provide technical expertise to the Board, DWR employees, state/federal agencies, and citizens of Virginia. 
Primary areas of responsibility for this position include leading, co-leading, or cooperating on statewide wildlife health research, surveillance, and management programs; managing and analyzing wildlife disease surveillance data; planning and conducting research; formulating regulations; and preparing reports. 
This position, while largely autonomous in daily duties, receives oversight regarding administrative and personnel matters from the immediate supervisor, the State Wildlife Veterinarian, who will also provide programmatic guidance regarding work priorities for the various subjects 
Minimum Qualifications
Comprehensive knowledge of wildlife management principles and practices, techniques to manipulate wildlife populations and habitats, pertinent diseases of wildlife, and emerging or evolving One Health topics.
Considerable knowledge and experience with Microsoft Office, public presentations, technical and popular writing, and database management.
Familiarity with statistical analysis software, Access, ESRI ArcGIS, research design, sampling theory, and statistical analysis. Demonstrated ability to work effectively within a team or independently using a project management approach to implement management programs and research projects.
Knowledge of public input processes and policy/regulation development.
Ability to resolve conflict and achieve effective solutions working with diverse stakeholders, staffs, and agencies.
Exhibit a customer service oriented approach when working with constituents and partners.
Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing, including demonstrated ability to relate technical knowledge to technical and non-technical publics and to deal effectively with those groups.
Ability to think critically in stressful situations. 
High school diploma or GED along with significant experience in wildlife conservation and management required. 
Possession of, or eligibility for, a valid VA driver’s license required.
Preferred Qualifications
A Bachelor of Science and/or advanced degree in wildlife management, wildlife biology, or a closely related field preferred.
Professional field experience related to wildlife health, most notably chronic wasting disease, Sarcoptic mange, rabbit hemorrhagic disease virus, Echninococcus multilocularis, West Nile Virus, and/or hemorrhagic disease is preferred.
