Wildlife Area Manager
This posting will be used to fill four vacancies.
These positions provide technical support to the Wildlife Division in Regions 1, 2, and 4 on Wildlife Management Areas and other Department of Wildlife Resources (DWR) owned and/or managed lands and facilities as directed.
Primary responsibilities are to develop, enhance, and maintain fish and wildlife populations/habitats and to support wildlife, fisheries, and boating access objectives.
The position will provide for public access, and promote and ensure safe opportunities for the public to pursue wildlife associated recreation.
The position will also support the Department of Wildlife Resources (DWR) management programs as necessary.
Position Locations:
Region 1: Big Woods Work Unit consisting of Big Woods and Parker Branch Wildlife Management Areas and working on other DWR lands, facilities, and boat accesses as directed.(Sussex County Virginia)
Region 2: Horsepen Work Unit consisting of Horsepen, Featherfin, James River, and Tye River Wildlife Management Areas and working on other DWR lands, facilities, and boat accesses as directed.(Buckingham County Virginia)
Region 4: Phelps Work Unit consisting of C.F. Phelps, G. Richard Thompson, Merrimac Farm, Rapidan, and Weston Wildlife Management Areas and working on other DWR lands, facilities, and boat accesses as directed. (Fauquier County Virginia)
Minimum Qualifications
A working knowledge of the principles and practices of wildlife management and the needs of wildlife, and facilities/construction maintenance.
Ability to safely operate and conduct general maintenance of farm equipment and implements, motor vehicles, and power equipment. Ability to perform a variety of trade skills (carpentry, electrical, welding, etc.) for general facilities maintenance.
Ability to assess structural and mechanical maintenance needs and develop appropriate specifications to take corrective action.
Ability to manage hunt programs, utilizing the principles and practices of wildlife management.
Ability to understand and apply fish and wildlife regulations; implement management and research projects with minimal supervision.
Ability to supervise others in the completion of projects.
Ability to capture and handle wildlife.
Possess interpersonal and written/oral communication skills to work effectively with the public and coworkers as well as engage with diverse stakeholders and constituents.
Basic skills using personal computers, software to include Microsoft Word, Excel, and Access and mathematics.
Able to work independently and perform manual labor under varying climatic conditions.
Possession of, or eligibility for, a valid Virginia driver’s license with appropriate CDL designation for assigned equipment.
High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent
Preferred Qualifications
An Associate’s or Bachelors Degree with a major in wildlife management, forestry, biology, or a related field, or equivalent experience and a high school diploma.
