Child Development Specialist

Join the team of staff at Camp Wawenock on Sebago Lake in Maine, a traditional seven-week girls' camp. Wawenock counselors are caring individuals interested in positively impacting the life of a child. They work as a team with other staff and the Directors to create a welcoming camp family. All counselors live on site at Camp and in cabins with campers, and also teach activities (typically in 1-3 different activity areas) unless otherwise arranged with the Directors.
 
Counselors work directly with the Activity/Unit Heads responsible for their areas of teaching and living. Counselors receive ongoing support and feedback from the applicable Activity/Unit Head and also participate in a weekly full staff meeting facilitated by the Directors.

General Responsibilities

  • Care for the emotional and physical health and safety of campers
  • Adhere to and role model policies and procedures as related to the unit/activity
  • Maintain open communication with Activity/Unit Heads and co-teachers/counselors
  • Respond to emergency situations
  • Contribute to any special programming events
  • Provide coverage for staff time off or support as needed
  • Relate to each child as an individual to support her growth and development       


Activity Counselor Responsibilities

  • Provide quality, individualized instruction
  • Plan lessons in accordance with the developmental needs of the group

 

Cabin Counselor Responsibilities

  • Work with the cabin group as a whole in regards to group dynamics (including problem solving and bonding opportunities)
  • Plan cabin activities to support camper friendships

 

Experience/Qualifications

  • Counselors must be 19 years old and/or completed a year of college
  • Skills and experience related to teaching one or more of the activities that Wawenock offers
  • High level of responsibility, accountability, and flexibility
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and leadership skills with a teamwork attitude
  • Experience working with children preferred
  • Ability to pass a criminal background check
