Audio Engineering Intern - Summer 2022

Program Duration: May 31, 2022 - August 19, 2022
INTERN WILL LEARN AND BE EXPOSED TO: Live broadcasting of NPR programming, Master Control operation, technical support of 20+ audio production facilities, along with audio repair, sweetening, and mastering. Audio Engineers also support podcast production and mixing, remote recording and transmission, critical listening, conference room A/V support, sound reinforcement, equipment repair, and NPR’s Tiny Desk Concert production. Our intern will work throughout the networked newsroom to observe and assist in a fast-paced, deadline driven, 24x7x365 production environment.
NPR’s Audio Engineering department seeks superstar to join our team for our paid 2022 Summer Internship. This position will work directly with our engineers and content creators to learn and practice the skills required to ensure the production and delivery of high-quality audio to an audience of millions.
Additionally, interns are typically assigned one or more research projects to manage. Examples of recent projects include microphone and recorder evaluation and review, AoIP audio quality analysis, creating and updating training documentation for journalists, software development, and remote equipment kit testing and preparation.
The audio engineering internship at NPR provides experience with broadcast and media workflows and technology not found in a university setting. Our ideal candidate is a proactive, courteous, and a customer service oriented junior, senior, or recent graduate. Familiarity with NPR’s radio or podcast programming, a passion for learning new technologies, and an appreciation of the mission of NPR will ensure a good match.
INTERN RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Assemble and mix complex live broadcasts and record pre-produced elements working with producers and directors in a high-pressure environment
  • Promote and maintain NPR’s quality standards by identifying and repairing impaired audio
  • Analyze, repair and mix audio on tight deadlines using common tools (equalizers, compressors, noise reduction, etc.)
  • QC, mix, and sweeten podcasts before publication using DAVID Systems MTE, AVID Pro Tools, and iZotope production tools
  • Monitor inbound and outbound audio streams and associated automated play-out systems. Rectify technical outages and respond to programming schedule changes quickly and accurately
  • Schedule, connect, and route audio transmissions (IP, ISDN, T1, etc.)
  • Test and ensure preparedness of in-house and remote broadcast and production systems
  • Consult, train, and support journalists in the use of NPR technical facilities and remote recording and transmission equipment
  • Teach and encourage best production practices and workflows
  • Provide technical support for remote events including site assessment and venue coordination
  • Troubleshoot unexpected situations confidently, calmly, and effectively
  • Communicate clearly with both editorial and technical colleagues
  • Keep abreast of emerging audio broadcast equipment, systems, and workflows
  • Write and update documentation for user support guides
WHO CAN APPLY?
  • LOCATION: This internship will be onsite at our Washington, DC office. But please note that there could be a need to pivot this internship to fully remote if pandemic related developments warrant that change. 
  • EDUCATION: Must be a current student in an accredited degree program or a recent graduate of no more than 12 months from the month of the start of the internship. 
REQUIRED SKILLS 
 
  • Course of study in audio engineering or related field (third or fourth year preferred)
  • Experience with audio production (broadcast, live sound reinforcement, music recording, theatre, post production, ENG)
  • Professional and courteous demeanor supporting a varied and demanding client base
  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills
  • Multitasking abilities for fast approaching deadlines
  • Ability to identify and correct audio impairments and mixed audio to established loudness standards
 
 
PREFERRED SKILLS
  • Live broadcast, preferably within public media
  • Live mixing (broadcast, sound reinforcement, etc.)
  • Computer troubleshooting, networking, and/or software development
  • Audio transmission (VoIP, IP CODECs, emerging technologies)
  • Audio DAWs, plug-ins, peripherals
  • Remote location recording and/or audio transmission
  • Music recording, mixing, mastering
  • Audio quality control and repair (familiarity with iZotope RX is a plus)
  • Audio for video, post-production, sound design 
  • Teaching and/or training
SCHEDULE
  • The internship work schedule is based on a 40-hour work week, typically 09:00 – 05:00, Monday through Friday, however there is flexibility to allow for concurrent classwork, and for exposure to off-hours/weekend production events.
