Mental Health Counselor 2

The Mental Health Counselor utilizes basic principles of the biological and behavioral sciences in the assessment and treatment of patients. The Mental Health Counselor functions as an associate, accountable to and practicing under the direct supervision of a registered nurse or social worker, certified teacher, or Milieu Coordinator 2. The Mental Health Counselor exemplifies the Rush mission, vision, and values and acts in accordance with Rush policies and procedures.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Clinical Responsibilities
1.1 Maintains a patient caseload as an associate, based upon unit and/or program needs, patient status, and individual's expertise.
1.2 Initiates and maintains effective communication with patients, their significant others, and with all members of the health care team.



Contributes to patient care:



Implements interventions as outlined by the treatment team.


Reports significant and emergent information concerning assigned patients as well as events in the milieu to the RN.


Documents pertinent data on appropriate patient care records.


Participates in patient care conferences.


Protects patients' rights and confidentiality.


Accompanies patients to off-unit tests/procedures when necessary.

2. Contributes to the Milieu
2.1 Maintains a safe environment.

2.2 Ensures patient belongings are checked in per unit safety standards.
2.3 Responds appropriately to emergency situations.
2.4 Participates/leads scheduled patient groups on unit in recreational and "Activities of Daily Living" for children and adults.
2.5 Initiates appropriate unscheduled activities with individuals and groups of patients.
2.6 Models a range of adaptive behaviors in a consistent manner.
2.7 Participates in staff meetings in an active manner.
2.8 Participates in the orientation of new staff.

Work requires the ability to walk throughout the Medical Center and to be standing or walking most of the designated shift.


Work requires lifting or carrying objects 35-40 lbs. and supporting and positioning patients (including take down and hold maneuvers), some of whom may exceed 300 lbs.


Work conditions include performing procedures where carelessness could result in injury or illness and/or contact with potentially infectious materials and/or strong chemical agents.

Mental Health Counselor 2 - Adult Psychiatry

Position Highlights:
As a staff member of the Adult Psych Unit, the Mental Health Counselor utilizes basic principles of the biological and behavioral sciences in the management and treatment of patients on this unit.
The Mental Health Counselor is accountable to and practices under the direct supervision of a registered nurse.
In addition to Mental Health Counselors, the treatment team includes MDs, RNs, Social Workers, OT, and Art Therapists
Full-time position - Rotating shifts
Benefit Eligible position

Position Responsibilities:
The Mental Health Counselor functions under the supervision of an RN to perform delegated tasks, utilize basic principles of the biological & behavioral sciences in the treatment of patients, and participate in and lead group sessions.
Duties include taking vital signs, bathing patients, leading therapeutic group activities and assisting patients with basic activities of daily living while maintaining patient safety on the unit.


Position Qualifications Include:
Bachelor's degree required.
Progressive experience in the treatment of the mentally ill or disabled; one-year related experience preferred.
Maintain current BLS preparation.
Certification required in de-escalation training within 6 months of hire.
