All-Boys Summer Camp Counselor (Camp Awosting)

Our team of counselors is quite possibly one of the most important aspects of Camp Awosting. Our role models are friendly, driven, passionate, and responsible. They are caring, creative, and energetic. They dedicate their entire summer to live and breathe Awosting, and our campers absolutely adore them! We are proud to have an amazing staff return rate each summer, with many staff returning for several years, helping keep our camp traditions alive.

Awosting staff are awesome! We are proud to say that year after year, parents continue to tell us that our staff is one of the key things that make us different from other camps. Sure, they are fun, characters that will do crazy things like play mud soccer in the rain, make an absolute fool of themselves at a campfire, and generally become the coolest person your son has ever known. But at the same time, they are caring, conscientious, and responsible individuals we search long and hard for all winter long. They are hyper-aware of the safety and well-being of all campers and they value the fact that you, as parents, are entrusting them with your most prized possession. The staff to camper ratio varies from 1:4 to 1:5, depending on the age of the campers.

Our staff is an international one – coming from as close as CT and the Tri-State area to as far away as the UK and New Zealand. We take staff recruiting very seriously and background checks are performed on all staff before they start. One of our directors interviews and hires all the staff – so we are sure that they meet the Awosting standards.

All of our staff members are activity specialists. In the areas like Archery and many of the Waterfront activities, we require that all staff members be certified. For example, all of our Waterfront staff are American Red Cross Lifeguard certified.

Job Duties:
  • Set up equipment fully during pre-camp week
  • Complete inventory and end of summer reports by specified dates
  • Breakdown, pack up and clean equipment and the areas at the end of the summer as per the closing activity instructions
  • Be a role model to campers and staff in your attitude and behavior. 
  • Follow and uphold all safety and security rules and procedures.
  • Set a good example to campers and others in regard to general camp procedures and practices including sanitation, schedule, and sportsmanship. 
  • Engage with campers in the cabin, in the activity areas and around camp during free times.
  • Direct, supervise, and organize campers in their camper group within activities and throughout the camp in order to meet the intended camper outcomes. 
  • Apply basic youth development principles in working with campers through communication, relationship development, respect for diversity, involvement, and empowerment of youth.
  • Assure campers are properly supervised at all times.
  • Take direct responsibility for the health and safety of each child and to report any unusual symptoms or incidents to the leadership team and/or Camp Director.
  • Reward/praise campers for outstanding behavior or achievements. 
  • Represent the camp when interacting with parents or community members.
  • Provide parents with appropriate feedback and information as needed for their campers to have a successful camp experience.
  • Follow safety and security protocols when campers are in public while presenting a positive image of the camp.
  • Complete assigned paperwork carefully and accurately and deliver them to the leadership team. 
  • Submit a report at the end of the summer covering accomplishments, inventory, and recommendations for next year’s program.
  • Submit the Summer Curriculum Outline for the activity area to the Camp Directors by June 1st, which includes lesson plans for each age group (juniors, intermediates, & seniors), rainy day and hot day lesson plans if necessary, and a list of supplies requested. 
  • Create and submit both cabin and activity write-ups per session for the yearbook.
  • To participate and supervise their assigned group during special events, including but not limited to talent shows, awards ceremonies, and all-camp activities.
  • If necessary, review camper applications prior to each session in order to become familiar with camper personalities and special needs/circumstances.
  • Carry out any additional tasks set forth by the camp leadership. 

  1. Ability and experience in supervising and teaching program area; coaching experience and certification preferred.
  2. At least 19 years of age.
  3. Must submit a health history record and examination form prior to the first day of work.
  4. Must have the ability to interact with all age levels.
