Health Facilities Surveyor (Job Id 17738)

The Health Facilities Surveyor inspects healthcare facilities and related services in areas such as nursing, patient activities, dietary, and life safety codes to ensure compliance with state and federal licensure and certification regulations for the protection of the public from health and safety hazards. 

Significant in-state travel with overnight stays every week is required.

Licenses and Certifications:

  • must be licensed as a Licensed Social Worker (LSW) or Registered Dietitian in South Dakota. Previous health care experience in Long Term Care is recommended. The candidate must pass the CMS SMQT within approximately 6-months of employment as appropriate for surveying.

Knowledge of:

  • principles and practices of the disciplines providing services to patients and residents in health care facilities;
  • medical terminology;
  • federal and state laws and regulations related to licensure and certification of health facilities and operational programs;
  • inspection procedures;
  • food safety and sanitation programs;
  • the causes and control of diseases produced by unsanitary conditions;
  • computer applications such as Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.

Skill to:

  • provide technical assistance and information that contributes to the development of wider solutions or approaches to healthcare issues and situations;
  • conduct or review ongoing psychosocial, physical, and/or functional nursing assessments of individuals/families/populations to determine a plan of action/intervention;
  • conduct ongoing assessments of care delivery processes of a particular healthcare population to promote change that will support desired outcomes;
  • review records, practices, and/or operations to assess the quality of care and to ensure appropriate inter-disciplinary communication for the continuity of care;
  • provide orientation and mentors/preceptors junior colleagues, interns, and/or students to develop and prepare quality practitioners.

Ability to:

  • access all occupied areas of a health care facility to conduct inspections and complete the survey process.
