Overview:  
WCSU Libraries seeking a motivated and passionate graduate student to support the newly reimagined Peer Mentor Program. Beginning in Fall 2021, FY students considered at-risk, defined as graduating high school with a GPA lower than 85, will be enrolled in the 0-credit course Fundamentals of Academic Success. This course connects students with trained peer mentors to facilitate the transition to college, provide accountability and support, and foster academic success. The Peer Mentor Graduate Assistant position offers ample opportunity to bring innovative ideas and be involved in the growth of a pilot program.
 
Description:
The GA will work closely with the Coordinator of the Peer Mentor Program in collaboration with the Tutoring Resource Center Coordinator to assist with the planning and development of the course Fundamentals of Academic Success.

Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:
  • Assist with the coordination of the course Fundamentals of Academic Success
  • Track FY student participation and completion statistics
  • Provide leadership and supervision for undergraduate Peer Academic Coaches/Mentors
  • Participate in the training of peer mentors including, assisting with the implementation, tracking, and documentation of CRLA International Peer Mentor Training Program Certification
  • Assist with program outreach, marketing, and communication
  • Other duties and projects as assigned by supervisor

Desired Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree required. Acceptance into a master's degree program in Student Development in Higher Education or related education or counseling program.
  • Experience with mentoring or tutoring programs.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and take initiative on self-guided projects.
  • Professional interest in academic coaching, peer education, or mentoring programs; first-year experience programs; advising and/or counseling; training and professional development for peer educators.
  • Ability to apply student development theory to promote student growth and development.
  • Proficiency in Office 365 (including Microsoft Teams and Excel) and online video conferences platforms such as WebEx, Blackboard Collaborate, or Microsoft Teams.
