Title: Upper School History & Social Science Teacher - US Government, Politics & Economics

Reports to: Director of Upper School

Position Summary:
The Miami Valley School’s (MVS) mission is to challenge young people of promise to become self-sustaining learners and compassionate global citizens. MVS is seeking an innovative and culturally inclusive History teacher committed to developing compassionate global citizens who are both deeply aware of and engaged in issues at the local, national, and international  levels. This new faculty member will be joining a department committed to critically evaluating dominant historiographical narratives, as their current departmental self-study is asking, “Whose story are we telling?” The department looks forward to adding new courses that explore a diverse array of historical narratives and perspectives and grow the cultural empathy of students. This new faculty member will teach three, semester-long, upper school sections of US Government, and five single-semester upper school cultural, economic, and/or psychology social science electives. Faculty members teach a total of 4 classes each semester. Depending on enrollment, it is possible this faculty member would occasionally be asked to teach a course in the middle school.

This new faculty member will establish a supportive and engaging environment for upper school students (grades 9-12) and, on occasion, middle school students (grades 6-8), demonstrate the ability to create developmentally appropriate and inclusive curricula, work collaboratively with colleagues and parents, possess excellent communication skills, and demonstrate a teaching proficiency and comfort with a variety of different teaching and learning styles. Additional duties include co-teaching and designing a month-long immersive and interdisciplinary course, which may involve domestic and/or international travel. Ideal candidates will possess prior experience teaching History & Social Sciences in middle and/or upper school settings, advising clubs, coaching athletics, and/or leading student travel learning programs. Candidates without prior teaching experience will also be considered.

Primary Responsibilities:
  • Teach three semester long sections of US Government and five sections of electives, a total of 4 courses each term
  • Lead/Co-lead an Immersion program in January
  • Develop and propose new courses each year, including new Immersion programs
  • Serve as an advisor for a group of 10-12 students
  • Lead and/or advise extracurricular activities, which include student clubs and athletics

Qualifications:
  • Undergraduate or advanced degree(s) in History, the social sciences, education, or other humanities degree
  • The desire to work with pre-teen and teenage students in an experiential setting
