(M.S.) Footwear Material Innovation Intern

As an intern within Nike’s Footwear Material Innovation Team, you will provide project support on the polymers and fabrication of new methods of make through novel machine design and control to create future sustainable products. You will work closely with a broad range of Nike Innovation teams to generate ideas, solve complex material, process and application problems to enable and validate new more sustainable solutions for future footwear products.

You will collaborate with other technical experts, participate in ideation sessions, and aid in the establishment of test methods for new material chemistries and methods of make that could fall outside the normal realm of industry standard procedure by using internal and external testing resources when appropriate. You will be asked to review and present your work to Nike footwear innovators, developers, designers, and other Nike team members.  
 
Emphasis is placed on being a creative innovator and delivering unique solutions to the Nike NXT team. Your ability to work and communicate with a broad range of functions, personalities, and technologies is a key aspect of this intern position.  

Qualifications:

  • Pursuing a Master’s degree in Materials Science, Polymer Science, Chemical Engineering, or related field. 
  • 3.0 GPA or higher. 
  • Graduation date of Winter 2022 or Spring/Summer 2023. 
  • Knowledge in computer programming language(s), eg. Python, C#, VB. 
  • Experience with robotics and/or motion control for automation. 
  • Experience with 3D printing a plus. 
  • Experience with CAD or parametric modeling a plus. 
  • Knowledge of industrial test methods and standards a plus. 
  • Ability to work under tight timelines and with limited information. 
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills. 
  • Ability to effectively communicate complex topics and concepts to a wide and diverse audience. 
  • Ability to work with some level of ambiguity at times. Be flexible, with ability to take unclear goals and targets forward by formulating a plan which brings clarity and focus in order to achieve deliverables.  
  • Strong ability for cross team collaboration.
