The Courier Program at Frontier Nursing University is an eight-week rural and public health service-learning program for college students interested in public health, healthcare, or a related field. The Courier Program offers a unique opportunity for students to gain insight into the challenges and opportunities of providing healthcare in rural and underserved areas. Throughout this eight-week program, Couriers become immersed and engaged through their Courier Clinic Site, which will be in rural areas and/or in areas with mental health or primary care shortage areas serving medically underserved areas/populations. Couriers will also complete an online learning component during their internship, and serve the local community.
During their time on site, Couriers will shadow a variety of clinicians and provide leadership on special projects, as well as other avenues of community participation. Courier's experiences help them to fully comprehend the complexities of rural and underserved communities and healthcare, as well as grasp the compassionate and caring legacy established by our founder, Mary Breckinridge, which is carried on by FNU students, alumni, Couriers, and faculty.
Eligible applicants must be between the ages of 20 and 25 and must have completed at least two years of higher education. This program is designed to cater to individuals in an undergraduate program and is not appropriate for those currently enrolled in a graduate or professional program.
Successful applicants will be curious, adaptable, and self‐motivated. Candidates will have a commitment to respect and tolerance and be able to independently engage in unfamiliar situations. Strong written and verbal communication and computer skills are preferred. Personal transportation (a car) and a valid driver’s license are required. This is an unpaid position. Couriers will pay their transportation costs and a $500 fee to cover housing, board, uniform, and other associated costs. Half of the fee is due upon acceptance of the position, and half is due at the start of the program. If accepted, Couriers will be required to undergo a drug screen and background check, which will be paid for by the University.
