Undergraduate Research - Autonomous Image Processing
We are looking for a teammate to support the development of a process to assist in identification and classification of vegetation in images captured from a custom-built fixed-wing drone. Our anticipated process will require
- integrating a camera hardware and software into the drone fuselage and flight controller
- Combining the individual, overlapping images into an orthomosaic composite data set
- Generating a digital surface model
- Processing the data to locate tree canopies
- Developing a neural network to automatically identify trees
- Training the neural net using custom-generated data sets from our fixed-wing platform
Our group is predominantly engineering students, but we are open to all majors. Students in the group work in small teams or subteams with a high degree of autonomy. We meet as a large group (~20+ students) monthly, and as subteams weekly or biweekly. Students can participate in 2XXX or a 4XXX for-credit undergraduate research course.
Ideal candidates will have the following skills or knowledge
- Proficient at coding in MATLAB, C++, and/or Python
- Experience in image processing
- Understanding of artificial intelligence or neural networks
Don’t feel you qualify? Apply anyway. What’s the worst that could happen? We are looking for dedicated and driven team members.
