City of Virginia Beach Summer Work Program Department of Public Works, Engineering -2022

 
Summary:
The City of Virginia Beach, Department of Public Works Summer Work Program is designed to recruit diverse college students majoring in Civil Engineering or a related discipline. The program provides viable full-time work experiences during the summer that assist students in making connections between textbook knowledge and real-world experiences.
 
Position Description:
We are seeking talented students who demonstrate excellent problem solving, analytical, written and oral communication and interpersonal skills that may be utilized in the following positions:
 
Public Works/Traffic Operations (1 Position)
Duties may include performing basic engineering analysis and field investigations; collecting traffic counts using automated counters & tube counters; assisting with inspection and inventory for City infrastructure assets, including signs & signals; updating, and maintaining data base records & uploading traffic count data into the traffic data base system.
 
Public Works/Stormwater Engineering Center (1 position)
Position will include updating stormwater models and model analysis; field investigation for inspection and inventory of City infrastructure assets, including storm pipes and structures; assisting staff with the administration and review of CIP projects. Application must have a working knowledge of EPA SWMM and a strong background in GIS.
 
Public Works/Traffic Engineering Division: (1 Position)
Position will include performing field investigations of high crash locations and citizen safety concerns; developing and implementing safety and capacity improvements for traffic engineering related issues; conducting traffic data studies and processing the data for use in traffic signal evaluations and improvements; preparing preliminary designs, cost estimates and Initial Project Proposals to submit for funding; preparing and updating databases and tables; assisting traffic engineering staff in traffic studies.
 
Public Works/ Engineering and Construction Management Services/QAQC: (2 Positons)
Position may include reviewing site plans, roadway plans, drainage calculations, pavement design calculations, encroachments, property investigations, street closures, specifications, and permits; researching files, records, deeds, plats, and easements; performing basic calculations and computations; performing field work for projects including taking pictures, recording field measurements, etc.; preparing cost estimates; preparing and updating databases and tables; compiling data for projects; ensuring compliance with plans and specifications; design and construction quality assurance and quality control; assisting project management staff with routine duties and assisting survey crews and construction inspectors in the field.
 
 
 
 
Public Works/Transportation Division & Engineering Support Division (1 position):
Transportation Division: Position will include support for Roadway Capital Improvement Program (CIP); reviewing roadway plans; analyzing contract and change order data; attending office and field meetings with Project Managers; assisting with project delivery activities such as environmental permitting, private utility relocations, and assisting with field issues on construction projects. 
Engineering Support Division: Provide support for grant funding applications associated with Transportation and Stormwater projects. Duties to include project concept development; construction cost estimating; review of technical engineering reports; congestion/safety analysis; technical grant writing; response to grant application questions; and field visits in support of grant applications.
 
Public Works/ Stormwater Management Regulatory Compliance Division: (1 postion)
Duties may include reviewing water quality improvement project plans, surface water quality monitoring data, stormwater quality calculations; performing field work for water quality projects and water quality monitoring that may include taking photographs, collecting water samples, recording field measurements, etc.; inspecting active construction site, preparing cost estimates; preparing and updating databases and tables for projects and programs; assisting project management staff with routine duties.

Minimum Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a valid Driver’s license. Candidates must be currently enrolled in an ABET accredited engineering, engineering technology, architecture, or construction management program.
 
Position Information:
Candidates will work a 40-hour work program between the hours of 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Monday through Friday for approximately 12 weeks (May 23rd, 2022 – August 12th, 2022). Normal work hours may vary depending on their position. Flexibility for school schedules is allowable. The applicant is responsible to provide their own transportation to work and housing during the summer work program.

Note: The individuals selected will be employed through a temporary services agency and assigned to the City of Virginia Beach. A drug test and criminal background check, performed by this agency, is required before employment. Summer Workers in the program must also provide a recent DMV driving record prior to employment.
