Data Analyst

Using advanced analytic techniques, the Data Analyst executes ongoing analysis of research initiatives related to health policy, health choice/behavior, health economics, and population health at the NYU Grossman School of Medicine, Department of Population Health. The data analyst will process large data from conceptualization through presentation and will be responsible for management of datasets. Current projects include working with an array of New York City agencies’ data to assess the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on disparities in children’s health and well-being, and using national supermarket and restaurant sales data to evaluate the influence of food policies.

The Analyst will work in the Department’s Section on Health Choice, Policy and Evaluation (HCPE), a dynamic research group dedicated to determining the influence of public policy on health and health choices and advancing ways to make policies more effective. Using multidisciplinary approaches, particularly behavioral economics, the group researches how policy and environment exacerbate pressing public health problems among low-income communities and communities of color. The analyst will help to make informed policy recommendations and develop novel policy solutions.

·      Develop programs, methodologies, and files for analyzing and presenting large complex data

·      Import and clean raw datasets, evaluate data quality, and create analytic datasets

·      Perform advanced statistical and econometric analyses according to the study design (e.g., cross-sectional, time series, difference-in-difference) using R or Python

·      Detect and address issues in data and analytic results

·      Monitor, evaluate and improve the quality of data; prepare reports, charts and tables of results for faculty and staff

·      Cultivate deep familiarity with methodological approaches and data from diverse sources including big data platforms, large administrative databases, electronic health trackers, GPS units and others

·      Accurately and appropriately interpret and communicate results

·      Clearly communicate processes used and results achieved, suggest new and alternative approaches

·      Participate in data-driven decision making with investigators

Assist in writing and editing manuscripts for publication

·      Master's Degree in Economics, Applied Statistics, Public Policy analysis, or related quantitative research field, with 2 years relevant work experience.

·      Proficient in statistical/econometric approaches and techniques.

·      Strong statistical computing skills.

·      Proficient in R or Python.

·      Keen attention to detail and good documentation habits.

·      Excellent written and oral communication skills.

·      Strong ability to identify, analyze and solve problems.

·      Self-directed and able to manage priorities on multiple projects simultaneously.

·      Must work and communicate effectively with partners.

·      Strong time-management and prioritization skills.

·      Experience working with large health-related and/or administrative data sets

·      Proficient with geospatial tools such as ArcGIS (and by extension, the ArcPy module) or QGIS.

·      Interest in learning programming languages.

·      Experience contributing to research or articles for peer review.
