Network Technician

This is an independent contractor position in 2021, that is budgeted for a full time position in 2022. A technician selected for this position will start as an independent contractor, and be invited to apply for the full time position when it opens January 1st. 
 
General Description:
Under the direction of the IT manager and Assistant IT manager, the technician works on projects as a liaison and provides technical assistance to system users for computer and network related problems; consult with department representative to determine hardware/software requirements and develops specifications, sets up, configures and provides support for desktop computer equipment including hardware, software, and peripheral equipment. Upgrades existing hardware and software and provides technical assistance in support of networked systems. Help the Assistant IT manager when necessary.

Project Responsibilities:
  • Perform a variety of duties in the installation, testing, configuration and troubleshooting of hardware and software applications and equipment on networked systems.
  • Troubleshoot PC’s and laptops with hardware, software, network and virus issues.
  • Support to create new accounts or delete user accounts.
  • Monitor computer systems, phone system, networks, and applications for response time, problem prevention, performance and resource utilization.
  • Assist employees in remote work needs regarding technology.
  • Provide assistance in setup of phones and voicemail boxes for new users.
  • Install and troubleshoot various makes of printers, scanners, fax machines and MFP’s
  • Support and maintain cell phones by performing initial setup and ordering upgrades or damage replacement.
  • Monitor Email Filter. Conduct system and database back-ups as necessary; digital backups and maintain library.
  • Manage and maintain accounts and programs for Columbus Police Department.
  • Manage, monitor, and maintain Columbus Police Department’s in-Car video servers.
  • Manage, monitor, and maintain Columbus Police Department’s In-Car equipment, such as In-Car videos, laptops, printers and scanners.
  • Perform duties of Assistant IT Manager in his absence.
  • Perform other related duties as required.

Job Qualifications:
  • An Associate’s Degree in Information Systems, Computer Science or a related field preferred or equivalent on-the-job experience.
  • One-year experience of information systems and programming experience in a networked environment preferred.
  • Knowledge of MUNIS, Executime, SQL, or Python and other forms of data management a plus, but not required.
  • Additional education, certification or training in an appropriate discipline may be substituted for up to one year of the work experience.
  • Ability to analyze, define problems and resolve issues with effective solutions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective relationship with co-workers and with other departments’ personnel.

Language & Communication Skills:
  • Fluent in English.
  • Must read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or government regulations.
  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
  • Effectively present information and respond to questions from management and users.
  • Must conduct self professionally at all times.

Special Requirements:
  • Site visits in various weather conditions, at all hours, as well as occasional travel and need to be on call.
  • Overtime occasionally to resolve a problem or because of a special project.
  • IT support for evening government meetings required regularly.
  • Background check and drug screen will be performed before start of contract; position subject to Drug/Alcohol Free Work Environment requirements- safety sensitive, as driving occasionally required during the work day.

Remarks:
  • Bartholomew County or neighboring county resident within six (6) months after full time employment begins.
  • After conditional offer of full time employment is made to candidate by the Manager of IT, must be willing to undergo and pass a thorough background investigation and truth verification interview. This background check can take place while an independent contractor.
