Family Coach

Position Summary

Works in Family Resiliency programs to provide back-up support and coverage for other staff members as directed.
Provides trauma-informed office-based, community-based and home-based services in accordance to DCS Service
Standards to families who are experiencing difficulties related to child abuse and neglect. Facilitates supervised visitation and case management services for individuals and families involved with the Department of Child Services and/or Juvenile Probation. Maintains an ongoing caseload of up to 12 families. Testifies in court regarding services provided. Works individually and within a team to assist families in meeting treatment plan goals.



Job Description

Essential Functions

  • Will be cross trained for Network staff to do assessments and outreach with families hard to contact so regular staff can focus on assessments.
  • Act as coverage for staff that is out due to illness, vacations, personal time, etc.
  • Prep for court hearings.
  • Assist IIT’s when needed and initiate all new IIT’s and transfer to on-going staff.
  • Initiate 24-hour contact to families to arrange availability.
  • Attend DCS case conferences as required.
  • Maintain current intake paperwork.
  • Assist training tech or QA tech as needed.
  • Assist in back filing.
  • Monitor room cleanliness, toy cleaning, and communication boards.
  • Assist SV scheduler as needed.
  • Attend weekly supervision with supervisor assigned.
  • Provide all services with a lens of child safety.
  • Successfully deliver services to referred families.
  • Respond with a sense of urgency to calls, texts, and emails from leadership team and peers as within 24 hours.
  • Complete all required paperwork within established format and deadlines (ex: billable case notes, collateral case notes, monthly reports, data sets, payroll and any additional paperwork).
  • Complete case notes for all services provided in a detailed, yet concise, professional format.
  • Establish an emotionally supportive, non-judgmental, trusting relationship with parent(s), using independent
       judgment and adjusting approach as needed in the specific situation.
  • Establish a treatment plan with SMART goals and objectives with each client to drive client services.
  • The treatment plan will be updated with new goals as the client’s circumstances change, according to the most stringent standard.
  • This treatment plan will incorporate the needs identified by DCS, a child safety goal and any needs identified by the staff and the client.
  • The staff will provide coaching through modeling, prompting, praising and use of reflective questions to support client in completing treatment plan goals.
  • Exercise discretion and judgment in identifying plans of action to achieve goals and objectives, including day-to-day direct contact with clients, government entities, with-in SCAN, other agencies, and the court system.
  • Maintain regular communication with Referral Agency Coordinators, supervisor, peers, caregivers and clients on all assigned cases (including cases that are on hold).
  • Advocate on behalf of the client to obtain community services.
  • Willing to work with a client population that may have service or support animals, interpreters, special needs or other necessary accommodations.
  • Use personal vehicle to provide transportation to clients and/or children, which may also include service or support animals.
  • Teach and role model parenting techniques to the family using approved methods and materials.
  • Teach home management, financial management, child-care, discipline, nutrition and personal skills as appropriate.
  • Attend 8 to 12 in-service training sessions per year.
  • Attend weekly supervision with supervisor according to the most stringent standard.
  • Attend court hearings, case conferences, team meetings, department meetings and other meetings as required.

  • Willingness and ability to perform intensive hands-on home-building skills in client’s home.

  • Must be able and available to work as emergency back-up for cases.


Physical Demands

  • Climb and maneuver steps in narrow hallways and in small rooms

  • Operate video machine, telephone and other common standard office equipment
  • Discern and evaluate sounds, interactions and movements in multiple situations in order to determine the potential for child abuse and neglect
  • Use senses of sight, hearing, and smell to evaluate the safety of the environment for children
  • Operate and transport others in a motor vehicle
  • Ability to respond rapidly to rescue a child
  • Communicate and teach parents and children of varying intellectual capabilities
  • May be subjected to infectious diseases, substances and contaminated articles physically out of the control of the children supervised
  • Environment may require safety precautions
  • May be required to provide service in contiguous counties surrounding Allen County

Expected Hours of Work

·       Some flexibility in hours is allowed, but the employee must work 40 hours each week to maintain full-time            status. 



Required Education

·       Bachelor’s Degree in Human Services, Social Work, Education or directly related field.
·       One year of full-time experience in home management, home maintenance, and/or child-care.
·       Experience working in a human service organization a preference.
·       Life or job experience caring for children.
