Social Media & Marketing Intern - Job Description
 
McDonogh Network Mission: The McDonogh Network is an active and engaged networking organization consisting of multiple generations of Lafayette College's Black alumni and students. The network seeks to support current members’ emotional, social, and academic growth through mentorship, communications, events, and activities. The organization will serve as a forum to uplift Black voices, support racial equity, and foster a healthy Lafayette experience.
 
Position Overview:
The McDonogh Network Social Media Intern assists with promotional efforts through social media to increase alumni and student awareness of stories, articles, events, programs, and resources. This position allows a student to help shape the McDonogh Network marketing plan for a variety of programs and services, as well as strengthen their social media presence.
 
Responsibilities may include:
  • Partner with McDonogh Network Staff Liaison and McDonogh Network Chair to determine assigned projects.
  • Maintain an engaging McDonogh Network presence on Instagram and Facebook. Provide regular, timely, informative, and image-driven McDonogh Network updates through posts that include marketing of upcoming events, workshops, and programs, links to helpful articles, alumni or student profiles, and more. Develop creative ways to build and maintain Instagram and Facebook followers and engagements.
  • Design electronic marketing materials for alumni events, virtual programming, or other Network events.
  • Continue to build upon Instagram presence by sharing interesting and informative posts. Repost from Lafayette College channels to ensure synergy in communication sharing and suggest relevant re-postings to ensure McDonogh Network stories are shared widely through various College channels.
  • Leverage knowledge of LafSync to maximize McDonogh Network presence and connection with students, including creating news posts, adding photos, building promotions, and adding a suite of key files.
  • Conduct research and meet with various campus constituents to determine effective marketing strategies for individual programs and services.
  • Assist with planning and strategy around McDonogh Network events. Attend events as appropriate to assist with writing follow-up stories on the events.
  • Meet with Black alumni and students as identified by the Alumni Engagement and Annual Giving team to conduct interviews and write alumni and student profiles to share via social media and web channels.
 
Learning Opportunities:
  • Develop social media and marketing expertise necessary to serve as a knowledge resource. Recommend outlets to market McDonogh Network programs on campus, based on the program type, audience, etc.
  • Advance design skills and build a portfolio of work including print media, online content, and video.
  • Establish professional relationships with Alumni Engagement and Development staff members, gaining first-hand insight into the roles and responsibilities of each team member.
  • Obtain instruction and feedback during weekly meetings and when working individually with each staff member to build personal strengths and develop new skills, knowledge areas, and abilities.
 
Experience & Qualifications:
The ideal candidate should be enthusiastic, highly motivated, results-oriented, and have excellent communication skills, attention to detail, and strong creative abilities. Additionally, candidates must:
  • Possess a strong ability to manage time and complete tasks with efficiency.  
  • Have in-depth knowledge and experience with Facebook and Instagram.
  • Demonstrate proficiency with design software including Canva, Adobe Photoshop, and Publisher, as well as video editing software such as iMovie.
  • Possess experience working independently as well as collaboratively.
  • Be able to professionally interact with others across the College on behalf of the McDonogh Network.
  • Have a strong interest in marketing and social media; coursework or experience in marketing is beneficial.
