Postdoctoral Research Associate - Uranium Chemistry
Overview:

We are seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate who will support the Materials and Chemistry Group in the Nuclear Nonproliferation Division (NND), National Security Sciences Directorate (NSSD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).
Major Duties/Responsibilities:
- Expand and contribute to existing research lines in uranium materials chemistry for nonproliferation-relevant materials
- Perform material analysis using Raman spectroscopy, infrared spectroscopy, electron microscopy, x-ray diffraction, and other spectroscopy and microscopy methods
- Investigate novel material synthesis and alternative chemical synthesis routes
- Assist in routine laboratory operations and instrumentation maintenance and method development
Basic Qualifications:
- A PhD in Chemistry, Geology, Materials Science, or a related field completed within the last 5 years
This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with actinide materials handling and synthesis
- Experience with materials analysis instrumentation, including Raman and infrared spectroscopy, x-ray diffraction, and electron microscopy
- Experience in modern data analysis methods
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory
- Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs
