Postdoctoral Research Associate - Uranium Chemistry

Overview: 
Oak Ridge National Laboratory is the largest US Department of Energy science and energy laboratory, conducting basic and applied research to deliver transformative solutions to compelling problems in energy and security.
 
We are seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate who will support the Materials and Chemistry Group in the Nuclear Nonproliferation Division (NND), National Security Sciences Directorate (NSSD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).  
 
Major Duties/Responsibilities: 
  • Expand and contribute to existing research lines in uranium materials chemistry for nonproliferation-relevant materials
  • Perform material analysis using Raman spectroscopy, infrared spectroscopy, electron microscopy, x-ray diffraction, and other spectroscopy and microscopy methods
  • Investigate novel material synthesis and alternative chemical synthesis routes
  • Assist in routine laboratory operations and instrumentation maintenance and method development
 
Basic Qualifications:
  • A PhD in Chemistry, Geology, Materials Science, or a related field completed within the last 5 years
 
This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.
 
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience with actinide materials handling and synthesis
  • Experience with materials analysis instrumentation, including Raman and infrared spectroscopy, x-ray diffraction, and electron microscopy
  • Experience in modern data analysis methods
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory 
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs
