We’re looking for graduates from a range of degrees for different areas across our business. This requisition is for a role in Data Engineering/Data Science based at Rio Tinto Kennecott in Salt Lake City, Utah.
As Graduate Data Engineer/Scientist, your role will include collaborating with Mine Schedulers, Ore Body Knowledge, Asset Management, Operations, and Metals/Minerals Integrated Operations teams to collect, manage, and convert data sources into formats that are able to be stored, visualized, and maintained. The role also involves analyzing large data sets on mining system performance against benchmarks and assisting in data integrity projects and initiatives.
Eligibility:
- Bachelor or master’s degree in Data Engineering, Data Science, Computer Science, or related field – completed in 2020, 2021 or by May 2022
- Less than two years of relevant work experience (local and international)
- Exposure to large complex industrial environments with various data collection systems
- Right to work in the USA
- Valid driving license
What you’ll also bring
- Willingness to learn and to make an impact
- Understanding of relational databases
- Experience or academic work in languages such as SQL, R, Python, Java, or C is preferred
- Working knowledge of tools like Microsoft Excel, Power BI or Tableau is a plus
- Demonstrated analytical and problem-solving skills
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Enthusiasm to collaborate with different teams in unique environments

Where you will be working
Our Kennecott mine is a world-class, fully integrated copper mining operation, including a concentrator, smelter and refinery, located just outside Salt Lake City, Utah, in the United States. We produce copper, precious metals including gold and silver, molybdenum and sulfuric acid. Kennecott has been mining and processing minerals from the rich ore body of the Bingham Canyon Mine since 1903 and is one of the top producing mines in the world, comprising approximately 11 percent of U.S. annual copper production.
