Micro-Intern: Systems Engineering (IAP-Alumni Host)

Walden Local connects local, sustainable farms directly to consumers. We partner with farmers and fishermen across New England who are committed to using practices of regenerative agriculture to meet our standards for environmental impact and animal welfare. We’re an ambitious group, passionate about our mission to support healthier soils, animals, and communities while we strengthen the local food movement in the Northeast. We’re excited to offer an opportunity for a student to gain first-hand experience doing technical work in a mission-driven field.

You will design and implement a real-time inventory tracking and request system to support Walden’s fulfillment team. This role requires creative problem solving, software development skills, and the ability to collaborate with non-technical stakeholders. You’ll get to exercise a wide-range of engineering skills, using both high-level design thinking to come up with the framework of your system in addition to more technical, detail-oriented work to write the specific software for your system. You’ll think about user needs, physical and technical constraints, and future use of your system in addition to making decisions about database models, user interfaces, and reporting metrics.

What you’ll do:
  • Execute a project from start to completion under the mentorship of one of Walden’s Systems Engineers over the four weeks of IAP
  • Design a system to improve the efficiency and accuracy of our inventory replenishment process within the pick-and-pack lines in our warehouse. This may entail designing database models, user interfaces, building a Python application, and creating a reporting dashboard.
  • Integrate your solution into our custom internal Python application that guides operators through the fulfillment processes
  • Collaborate with warehouse managers to understand user needs, design a workflow, get feedback on your solution, coordinate testing, and iterate on your design

What you’ll bring:
  • Prior experience in Python
  • Excitement for solving both high-level problems (systems design) and in-the-weeds problems (writing software)

What we offer:
  • Compensation: $20/hour
  • Perks: Up to 5lbs of free meat weekly

Location and Transportation:
  • Position will be based out of our Tewksbury office (off Rt 495) and warehouse (off Rt 93)
  • Car-pool transportation is available from Davis Square, Somerville
