Youth Development Counselor- K-5 Out of School Time Program


Position: Youth Development Counselor- K-5 Out of School Time Program

Hours: 22 hours a week
Availability: Monday-Friday; afternoons until 6:00 pm
Term: August-June
Program Locations: Miami FL (Overtown, Little Haiti, Liberty City, North Dade)

Overview: The counselor delivers high-quality, age-appropriate positive youth development activities after school for children in grades K-5. The counselor recruits and enrolls participants, and facilitates the delivery of the program and curriculum. Programming includes academic support, homework help, group literacy, entrepreneurship, health, nutrition and physical fitness, arts enrichment, and social-emotional learning. 2-years of experience preferred.

URGENT, Inc. seeks a dedicated and inspired team member who is committed to creating positive and supportive spaces for elementary school youth in an after-school setting. The successful Part-Time Counselor candidate will possess the following skills:
  • Ability to relationship build with diverse children and youth
  • Facilitate in an engaging, creative, and supportive way
  • Ability to incorporate positive youth development, literacy, social skills, and creative arts in curriculum design
  • Have a keen awareness of and celebrate the vast cultural experiences of Miami children and youth

Responsibilities will also include:
  • Implementing curriculum, modifying, and developing activities that are in line with the URGENT, Inc. mission.
  • Outreach and recruit students on school sites and in the community
  • Administer pre and post progress assessments and record participation
  • Write up progress reports

Necessary Skills and Abilities:
  • Position requires flexibility, creativity, organization, energy, and passion for inspiring children to innovate, grow and transform
  • Minimum of 2 years experience facilitating activities with children in grades K-5. We are especially interested in candidates who can run micro-clubs in film, photography, digital media, visual arts, dance, drama, music, and entrepreneurship
  • A self-starter with the ability to work as a team player and foster cooperative work
  • Ability to communicate and relationship build with children, youth, parents, community leaders, and school staff
  • Background in partnering with schools, experiential learning, and group facilitation with children is a must
  • Ability to facilitate direct service programs with groups of 15-20 youth in grades K through 5
  • Experience facilitating programs in one or more of URGENT Inc.'s focus areas ex. Oral Reading Fluency, Reading Comprehension, Socio-emotional Learning, Sports, Play and Recreation, Nutrition, and arts enrichment
  • Ability to develop lesson plans and modify curriculum
  • Ability to identify needs and develop relevant activities for after-school setting
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to assist with math, social studies, and language arts homework for grades K-5
  • Personal commitment to learning and doing what it takes to get the job done while developing and building skills
  • Associates Degree or related training in school-age childcare working towards a school-age childcare credential
  • Reliable, timely, ability to receive and provide feedback in a constructive way
  • Able to follow through on directives given by supervisor
  • Responsible for administrative duties such as daily attendance, reporting, activity logs, etc.
