Seaside Sustainability is urgently seeking a technical lead to join us for a virtual volunteer opportunity over the course of September 2021-March 2022. This technical lead will oversee a blue technology design project dealing with the removal of marine debris which is being undertaken by a group of engineering students from Dartmouth Cook Engineering Design Center (CEDC) at Dartmouth College as their capstone project. We are looking for an experienced engineer with wide-ranging experience who is willing to volunteer a few (1-3 hours) hours a week as needed during the project. Critical to capstone project success is a technical lead who is well-versed in the problem at hand and willing to communicate with the student team on a regular basis to answer questions and provide technical support. The best project results occur when the technical lead has strong domain expertise, is engaged with the project, and can provide technical support as the students work through the engineering challenges. The position’s requirements are outlined below and as stated before, should only consist of 1-3 hours a week. Seaside Sustainability is a nationally recognized 501(c)(3) nonprofit dealing with coastal health and can provide a certificate upon completion of the project to verify the volunteer hours performed with us.
  • Is up to date on the scope of the project and the expected deliverables (as outlined by Seaside Sustainability with the students)
  • Agrees to project deliverables and scope with the student team members
  • Mentors the students and provides technical support throughout the project
  • Communicates with the student team once or twice a week to provide information, field questions, or provide advice (can be one meeting per week at a flexible time)
  • Reviews student proposals, reports, and other documents and provides good feedback in a timely fashion
  • Attends the final student project presentation on campus or virtually at the end of winter term in mid-March
