Swim Instructor - Southeast Y or Northwest Y

FLSA Status: Part-time, Non-Exempt
Reports to: Aquatics Director/Coordinator
Location: Positions available at both our Southeast and Northwest Y branches
POSITION SUMMARY:
  • Maintain a safe learning environment at the Monroe County YMCA aquatics facility.
  • Teach YMCA swim lessons focused on water adjustment, safety skills, and stroke development.
  • Part-time staff should work a minimum of fifteen (15) hours per month on a consistent basis, or instruct a class a minimum of twice a week on a consistent basis. 
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Complete all required records and reports on schedule.
  • Formulate daily lesson plans based on the YMCA of the USA swim lesson guidelines.
  • Keep current accurate attendance and skill records.
  • Evaluate skill progress and give letters to parents.
  • Have parents/participants complete instructor evaluation forms.
  • Complete subforms and get approval for substitutions.
  • Complete accident and incident reports when appropriate.
  • Communicate with parents.
  • Be available before or after class to offer feedback on the child’s progress to parents.
  • First-day orientation for parents.
  • Contact students/parents by phone for private swim lessons.
  • Conduct a well-organized class.
  • Put safety first!
  • Use daily lesson plans.
  • Be enthusiastic.
  • Always get in the water when necessary.
  • Be able to demonstrate and explain skills clearly.
  • Integrate the YMCA’s philosophy of body, spirit, and mind.
  • Contact aquatic coordinator/director with concerns.
  • Put equipment away after class.
  • Attend all aquatic in-service training and staff meetings.
  • Keep certifications current (if applicable)
  • Keep current on emergency procedures.
  • Be on deck 15 minutes prior to class time to assist in pool preparation, talk to parents, and meet participants.
  • Advise the aquatic coordinator/director or lesson supervisor of students in your classes who would benefit from a higher/lower swim level.
  • Advise the aquatic coordinator/director or lesson supervisor when you have students in your classes who are not on your class rosters, or when you have students on your class rosters who do not show up for classes.
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • YMCA swim instructor or Water Safety Instructor preferred but not required.
  • Must show patience, tact, and enthusiasm.
  • Must be able to lift at least 25 pounds.
