Tutor (Redwood City)

The Position
Integrated Learning Specialists (ILSs) work closely with a team of teachers to meet the needs of all students at that grade level. As our Learning Labs evolve into a rotational model this year, ILSs are responsible for working as a team to manage the students in the lab. The students would be rotating through independent work on online learning programs, Tier II interventions for additional academic support, project-based learning or other activities such as library time, advisory or legos. The centers will vary based on school, and our ILSs play a key role in the introduction of key life skills for our students leveled to their needs / progress.

Essential Functions:

  • Motivate students to participate in learning activities in a collaborative environment; create a positive student culture aimed at working together; maintain high behavioral expectations for all students with respect for one another and the space they are in.
  • Ensure that students have access to a joyful yet productive learning environment by enabling a culture of innovation while enforcing all campus safety rules and behavior expectations.
  • Actively “coach” students on all computer programs and ensure that the educational software used in the lab effectively meets the needs of students; perform targeted individual interventions and assist struggling students on computer programs.
  • Tutor small groups of students on literacy and/or math skills; use Rocketship-adopted curricula to deliver lessons which align to students’ needs.
  • Conduct regular progress monitoring assessments of progress for students participating in intervention; communicate progress monitoring results to families and classroom teachers; work with grade level teams to interpret progress monitoring data and use it to make intervention decisions for students.
  • Interpret and manage online student data generated by multiple educational software programs.
  • Communicate and collaborate with the teachers at their grade level, and school administrators; participate actively in staff development opportunities as a member of the Rocketship team.
  • Maintain computer equipment and accessories.
  • Proactively support the implementation of various learning centers within the lab bringing in new ideas as needed; ensure all centers are being run with fidelity and all students are getting an opportunity to hone in on new skills offered by the centers.
  • Manage the execution of rotations and transitions into the centers by our students seamlessly.
  • Serve as a mentor for our students helping them achieve their learning goals with a strong focus on driving student agency.

Qualifications:

  • Commitment to Rocketship’s mission, vision, and goals
  • Passion for working with children; ability to motivate and support children in reaching high levels of academic success 
  • Previous experience managing and/or teaching groups of elementary-age students is strongly preferred
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with ability to engage and work closely with a wide range of staff members
  • Basic computer skills including troubleshooting and an ability to communicate about technical difficulties
  • Ability to efficiently interpret, manage, and utilize multiple sets of data in order to best support students’ progress
  • Ability to learn laws, rules, practices and procedures related to public education and specific to Rocketship Public Schools
  • Fluency in English
  • Flexibility and a willingness to learn 
  • Interest in becoming a credentialed teacher is a plus, but not required.
  • Bachelor’s Degree is a plus, but not required
