Improving Public Engagement Through Social Media FS-USA-70

With over 30,000 followers on our social media channels, the National Forests in North Carolina, needs YOUR support to best use this tool to communicate to the public about the important work we do to sustain the health, diversity, and productivity of our Forests.

The National Forests in North Carolina (NFsNC) are the Pisgah, Nantahala, Uwharrie, and Croatan National Forests. Every year 7 million people visit these 1.25 million acres of public lands to camp, hike, mountain bike, hunt, fish, take scenic drives, or enjoy the forest's solitude.

We have over 30,000 followers on our social media channels which we use to communicate with the public about the important work we do to sustain the health, diversity, and productivity of the National Forests in North Carolina. Nearly all those followers are on Facebook and are 25 and older. We need help increasing engagement on Twitter and reaching younger audiences. Interns also would create social media campaigns that highlight our mission-critical work, volunteers, and partners. Communicating our information through infographics, animated graphics, and video is especially desirable. Research on our program areas including timber, botany, recreation and others would be necessary to create educational content. Interns would also create a directory of the social media accounts of our partners so that we can amplify their voices. These include other federal and state agencies and non-governmental organizations in recreation, forestry, wildlife, and other related fields. There will be opportunities to make presentations to other Forest Service staff on the work completed during the internship.

Primary Projects, Roles, & Responsibilities:
• Assist with the design, execution, and analysis of social media campaigns
• Design supplemental material for social media especially infographics, animated graphics, photos, and videos
• Develop and implement strategies to increase engagement on Twitter and reach younger audiences
• Produce quarterly social media reports, including information on growth, reach, and engagement
• Create a directory of the social media accounts of our partners
• Prepare and deliver presentations/trainings on the work that has been completed during the internship

This position is 100% telework. Volunteers must have access to their own computer, software, and equipment.

You will be part of a team of three interns working together virtually with our public affairs team in North Carolina. Your work will be featured on our social media platforms and you will have the opportunity to take ownership and lead key aspects of this project. VSFS interns will be signed up under Individual Volunteer Agreements (OF-301a). All VSFS interns are required to record their hours worked on this project and will be reported in the Volunteer & Service Programs Accomplishments Database (VSReports), the Forest Service’s official national reporting database.
