PRIMARY POSITION FUNCTION: Part of the Housing Information & Marketing team, the digital designer is responsible for managing marketing campaigns and creative elements, while leading, creating, and designing digital platforms that accurately informs, entertains, and engages audiences in an effort to support the operations and activities of University Housing, as well as enrich its visual identity.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Digital Design Support
- Provide leadership and strategic direction to improve and maintain modern standards of information architecture, user interface design, and content strategy across a variety of digital platforms, including website, email, social media, mobile applications, interactive displays, and StarRez, University Housing’s student housing management software solution.
- Conceptualize and produce design for the University Housing website, social media channels, mass emails and newsletters, online advertising, and digital signage. Deliver user interface and user experience (UI/UX) design to support digital platforms and ensure a balance between functional and aesthetic design and strategic brand alignment.
- Help strategize, design comprehensive wireframes and mockups, and manage the development of associated templates, themes, custom elements, and features while working closely with the marketing and development teams.
- Perform digital platform analytics analysis and review. Use analytical data to make informed, strategic content and design decisions.
- Stay up to date on current trends that involve design for web, mobile, desktop, and tablet applications.
- Utilize skills and experience to create products that visually communicate with the identified target audience.
- Function effectively under pressure with numerous interruptions and be able to work and manage many projects simultaneously.
Marketing Support
- Meet with University Housing units to review marketing objectives and recommend specific marketing approaches and timelines to achieve the unit’s desired goals. As a member of the Communication and Marketing team, interact with others as a creative problem solver and contribute unique ideas for strategic marketing initiatives for digital platforms.
- Draft comprehensive marketing plans and organize and manage projects with short-term as well as long-term planning and project management.
- Help to ensure accuracy and consistency of information including print materials, web content, and social media.
- Work both independently and collaboratively in a diverse, high-paced, team-based environment.
Unit leadership
- Provide leadership to the creative team that includes full-time Communication and Marketing staff and part-time students.
- Work as a collaborative team member with Housing units and end-users, Housing Information & Marketing team members, technical team members, and serve as the liaison to Student Affair Technology Shared Services. Supervise and mentor part-time student interns.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
Required: Bachelor’s degree in marketing, business administration, communications, public relations, or a closely related field.
Preferred: Master’s degree in graphic design, communications, marketing, advertising, computer science, or related field from an accredited institution of higher education.
Experience:
Required: Two years of professional work experience in marketing, public relations, communications, brand management, or a related professional area in a multi-client, multi-project graphic design environment. Demonstrated experience in digital graphic design, including experience with HTML, CSS, JavaScript and Java, working within a CMS, and digital accessibility standards; UI/UX principles and best practices; and wireframe design for responsive websites.
Preferred: Two years of experience in digital graphic design, including experience with HTML, CSS, JavaScript and Java, working within a CMS, and digital accessibility standards; UI/UX principles and best practices; and wireframe design for responsive websites. Experience in creating static and motion graphics for use in video production. Ability to create engaging graphics for social media.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Experience in Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator). Experience in website, mobile, or app design and wireframing. Understanding of digital content marketing and digital content strategy best practices. Understanding of best practices for accessible and responsive design in digital environments. Professionalism and ability to interact with administrative officials. Oral and written and interpersonal communication skills, specifically, the demonstrated ability to communicate design concepts to staff without formal design training. Strong organizational skills. Ability to work independently while producing accurate work on deadline while exercising discretion and judgment. Ability to work and lead in a team-based, collaborative environment with limited supervision. Ability to multi-task, often with frequent interruptions.
Environmental Demands:
Most work will be accomplished in a typical office setting but will also include frequent visits to other University Housing and campus locations. Some nights and weekends required.
SALARY AND APPOINTMENT INFORMATION
This is a full-time Civil Service Marketing Associate position appointed on a 12-month service basis. The expected start date is October 4, 2021 Salary will be commensurate with experience.
