Heavy Equipment Mechanic - Hugo Power Plant

SUMMARY: Under the supervision of the Mechanical Maintenance Supervisor, the Heavy Equipment Mechanic performs corrective and preventive maintenance on all site heavy equipment, automotive vehicles, and other equipment. The incumbent also maintains records on paper and in the computer system. In addition, the incumbent maintains repair parts inventories and monitors site fuel inventories.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned. Performs required preventive and corrective maintenance on all fleet and mobile equipment including hydraulic systems as outlined in vendor service manuals. Conducts preventive and corrective maintenance on the plant auxiliary diesel generator and diesel fire pump in accordance with vendor service manuals. Performs minor tune-ups and repairs on company vehicles as required. Completes required forms to ensure accurate records on all vehicles including oil and filter changes, fuel usage, repair frequency, safety inspections and renewal dates. Maintains preventative and corrective repair parts inventory for site vehicles and equipment. Maintains hand tools and special repair tool inventory necessary for the repair of site vehicles and equipment. Maintains all tools, equipment, and areas of responsibility in a clean, orderly, and safe condition. Repairs small engines, such as sump pumps, generators, and lawn mowers as required. Performs all work in a safe manner and follows all safe work practices and procedures. Assists maintenance mechanics during outages with pulverizer, turbine, valves, and other maintenance as required. Monitors and reports site fuel inventories including oil, gasoline, kerosene, and lubricants and ensures the security and efficient use of these stores. Enters maintenance requests and reports into the computer system.

QUALIFICATIONS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the education, experience, knowledge, skills, abilities, and behaviors required.
Education and Experience: Requires completion of a two-year vocational technical or similar course in automotive or diesel mechanics plus two years of experience. Experience using diagnostic equipment is required. Hydraulic system training or experience is required. Basic welding is required. Additional directly related experience may be substituted for education at a rate of two years of experience for one year of education.
Language Skills: Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively to other employees.
Math Skills: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
Computer Skills: Ability to use a personal computer to access the intranet, computerized maintenance systems, and Microsoft Office software as required.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS: Requires a current driver's license.
WORK SCHEDULE REQUIREMENTS: Incumbent works a weekly daytime schedule or other schedule as required and may be required to work overtime and on short notice. May also be required to travel on short notice.
