Roadway Engineer II

Carpenter Marty Transportation is an interdisciplinary civil engineering firm that offers an unsurpassed range of expertise to streamline transportation projects and improve design value for clients and project partners. We have a proven track record of providing clients with the highest quality plans, studies, and superior customer service. Our expertise lies in bridge, roadway, and traffic engineering; project management; public involvement; survey; right-of-way design services; and operational analysis. The position is open at either our Columbus or Cincinnati office locations.

Position Purpose: As a team member you will be working on the production of roadway construction documents for our transportation clients. You will be generating and/or reviewing standard detailed drawings using CAD, design software, and engineering principles for specific portions of construction, maintenance, and planning of transportation projects. You need to be self-confident, action-minded, motivated, and goal-oriented with the ability to comfortably jump between concurrent projects while overseeing staff and meeting client needs. You should thrive in a team environment and have a desire to mentor or train less experienced team members. Our preference is to have a person with 5-15 years of experience, but all experienced engineers will be considered. This position will have staff and project oversight duties once you are integrated into the roadway group and projects. A group management role is possible. Your attitude and fit with the company is just as important as your skillset, so we are willing to train a top candidate in some aspects of the work. Previous experience writing reports and giving presentations is desired.

Travel, Environment, and Typical Physical Activities: Our team members perform work in an open workstation environment utilizing a personal computer and various communication tools to perform tasks and coordinate with internal and external contacts. Our management style focuses on encouragement/support so you should be able to thrive in that environment and have a style that is compatible. The position involves overseeing and performing technical work designing and reviewing roadway plans, maintenance of traffic schemes, signing and pavement markings, roundabout layout and design, roadway construction quantities and estimates, roadway lighting, drainage analysis, culvert design, storm sewers, and erosion control. You should be confident enough to participate in and lead project meetings with the roadway team and clients. The candidate should have a desire to attend trainings and professional meetings to keep informed on new design criteria and policies. The position may require occasional travel to project site locations or to various client offices. Field sites range from undeveloped forest and farmland to four-lane interstates. Site visits will occur in all seasons of the year, cold and wet weather included. Work may include walking the project to verify field surveys, searching for drainage structures, taking photos of the sites, and performing traffic counts. Work-related travel could be in a personal vehicle, unless a company vehicle is available. Attendance at evening public involvement, council, and/or planning and zoning meetings may be necessary.
