Research Assistant II - Cellular Therapy & Flow Cytometry (136824)

The mission of the Stem Cell Transplantation and Cellular Therapy Department is to utilize transplantation therapies to eliminate cancer and provide personalized patient care. The program has a strong commitment to clinical and basic science research and to advancing the field of stem cell transplants. We are one of the largest centers in the world for stem cell transplants, performing more than 865 procedures each year, more than any other center in the nation.

The Research Assistant II coordinates and conducts experiments and carries out research projects in varied areas of chemistry, biology, physics and other biomedical, dental or related basic science areas. Constructs, assembles and operates laboratory apparatus and equipment. Reads literature and confers with superiors regarding new procedures and modifies them according to the needs of the project. Records and evaluates data obtained in accordance with methods requested. Studies are specific to cord blood transplantation and novel translational research studies. Position assists with the development of new clinical studies involving NK cells, B cells, T cells, the isolation and characterization of hematopoietic stem and progenitor cell subpopulations and the study of these cells in animal models with the goal of studying and improving hematopoietic engraftment.

KEY FUNCTIONS

Experiments

- Design, perform, and analyze data from experiments

1. cell cytotoxicity by real time imaging and Cr51 assay.

2. Monitor cytokine production of NK cells upon activation by tumor cells

- Expertise in handling 10+ color flow cytometry based experiments

- Expertise in aseptic techniques to maintain primary cells in culture

Research

- Read literature and confers with superiors regarding new procedures.

- Obtaining peripheral blood, bone marrow and spleen samples from animal models and processing of same for flow cytometric and in vitro assays.

Administrative

- Performs general lab duties and reagent preparation as assigned.

- Organizes internal meetings and manages data efficiently.

- Other duties assigned.

EDUCATION

Required: Bachelor's degree with major course works in one of the basic sciences.

Preferred: Master's degree with major course works in one of the basic sciences.

EXPERIENCE

Required: Two years experience in scientific or experimental research work. No experience required with preferred degree.

Preferred: Cellular therapy and flow cytometry experience.
