Respiratory Therapist (138464 / 138465)

The Respiratory Care team provides a full spectrum of inpatient and outpatient health care services 24 hours a day, seven days a week. With the help of highly trained equipment techs and internal information system support, our therapists can focus on the essentials of quality patient care. To do so, respiratory therapists are systematically assigned specific areas to promote respiratory excellence. Respiratory Care provides services to a full range of patients from toddler to the elderly with emphasis in acute and critical care.

The ideal candidate will be a Registered Respiratory Therapist and licensed with the Texas Medical Board as a Respiratory Care practitioner.

Shift: Days 6:30 am - 7:00 pm with rotating weekends and holidays

KEY FUNCTIONS

Patient Care :

Administers various respiratory care modalities, as ordered by physicians, or based on approved protocols.

Conducts pre and post modality assessment through direct contact and chart review.
Performs appropriate respiratory assessment; interprets clinical data; evaluates patient breathing effort, ventilatory pattern, and use of accessory muscles to develop plan of care based on this assessment; analyzes, interprets, recommends POC based on ABG and other clinical data.
Documents accurately and timely, and maintains departmental records. Participates in shift report to effectively communicate all relevant information to upcoming shift.

Ensures proper selection, assembly, use, and cleaning or disposal of equipment and/or supplies used in the delivery of respiratory services in accordance with infection control practices and based on department policy.

Recognizes and rectifies equipment malfunction.

Patient Safety :
Integrates patient safety principles into all aspects of care.

Monitors and evaluates patient care and processes in an effort to identify opportunities to improve safety and quality of patient care.

Responds timely and appropriately in emergency procedures such as airway management, resuscitation, intubation, and MERIT calls.

Assists with care and maintenance of department equipment and supplies.

Communicates with the supervisor/charge RT and biomedical engineering department of malfunctioning equipment.

Acts as steward of resources.

Education and Leadership:
Acts as Shift in-charge to ensure adequate staffing for all shifts; division of patient care assignments; responding to patient/family concerns; allocation of equipment and supplies.
Attends staff meetings, in services, and education seminars according to departmental guidelines.

Provides patient and/or family education related to specific respiratory modality.

EDUCATION

Required: High school diploma or equivalent, and Associates Degree in Respiratory Therapy from an approved and accredited program or university.

EXPERIENCE
Required: None

Preferred: Two years of experience as a Respiratory Therapist

LICENSURE / CERTIFICATION

Required:

Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT)

Basic Life Support (BLS) by AHA

Advanced Life Support (ACLS) by AHA

Licensed by the Texas Medical Board (TMB) to practice Respiratory Care.

Please Note: You may be required to interact with Covid-19 suspected and/or positive patients. You will be provided with appropriate Protective Equipment (PPE). The required PPE will involve a Fit Test. Proper fitting may necessitate trimming or shaving facial hair because beard growth or facial hair prevents the necessary seal between the respirator and the face.
